But he got can!   We all knew why. So I won’t say it. But from an outsider perspective “what does it look like to them”

Maybe people will look at it as SIU having higher expectations for the program than winning 2 games in the MVC Tournament in 5 years.  0 postseason tournament births in that span despite having two current Big Ten starters on the roster.

If Valpo can go out and get Roger Powell Jr. with their high school gym and lack of success, then SIU can find some kind of good candidate.

nope.  Just offering a perspective from someone that is looking at it from a different angle.  Love SIU. but if I was a coach looking to move up to a better position.  I would want to make sur where I am going is better and going to offer me a better place to coach. I believe SIU IS a great place to coach. But do others outside of our community think it is?

Hearing some very surprising rumors from fairly well connected sources. Still have a very hard time believing it, but the name I'm hearing is Kent Williams. Probably not true, but again pretty well sourced!

Remember what I said about other options not being as good as Spradlin?  I'd be fine with Kent coming on as an assistant though.

Kent Williams does not check the boxes we were given.  I would be shocked if he was the hire.

Perhaps someone has the bright idea that "Hey, maybe we can be a big winner with a successful high school coach just like Samford is with Bucky McMillan." But McMillan is an outlier and I don't see hiring high school coaches becoming the new craze. Now, I'd be thrilled if Bucky came to SIU, but he probably was out of our reach even before almost defeating Kansas. I agree with the consensus that Kent would be a fine assistant and perhaps even a "head coach in waiting" after a few years.

@resaluki-88 Yeah, i edited my post, i mean as an assistant. There is hopefully no way he would be our head coach, so was saying he would make more at Desmet than he would here as an assistant. Pretty sure Desmet pays him very well, probably at least a couple hundred grand. I mean, he was an assistant at some power 5 universities and left that to go to Desmet, so it has to pay well.

Kent was making pretty good money as an assistant at Tennessee, then went into the private sector for a short time. Most recently he was at SIUE and certainly wasn't making as much there as he was at Tennessee. If I had to guess he is probably making more then $100k and less than $200k at Desmet. I would be happy with Kent as associate head coach at Southern. Would probably be a little disappointed if he were named head coach, but would certainly support him and wouldn't doubt he would succeed. He did a ton of recruiting at Tennessee, Missouri State and SIUE, so that wouldn't be new to him. Again, I'm not sold on the rumors I have heard.

you just said what my thoughts were.  But from an outsider looking in they see 42 wins in 2 years and gets canned. Just trying to show what an outsider can be thinking when looking for another job.

is SIU the attractive job it once was.  Again as I stated before.  Last coach wins 42 games in 2 and he gets canned. What is a new coach thinking now.  Do I want to go there?

You are officially the new Dean SIU, only with Mullins instead of Lowery...

Just for the record, I see my name somehow got attached to the quoted post, and it wasn't mine. Normally it wouldn't bother me, but I just want to make sure I'm not being compared to Dean SIU, which is not something I aspire to.

I definitely wasn't referring to you. Sorry if it's misleading due to his reply to you.

I think they were referring to me.
I love SIU. Want the best all around.
just looking from a different perspective of an outsider.  Is the SIU coaching position still as good as it was?  That’s all. Geez. Trying to get an idea what others would think about from the outside world not SIU

like I said. Love SIU Want the best for them. Just offering a perspective of someone not affiliated with SIU or the surrounding community. What they may think about why the last coach was let go after winning 42 games in 2 years. Is that a job that I may be interested in.  That’s all I AM NOT NO WAY trying to be Dean. He is just a waste!

You keep repeating 42 wins in 2 years, a lot of those wins were empty.  Go look at how Mullins did against the top of the conference and then look at his record in Arch Madness.  He wasn't good enough.  I have a feeling both sides will look back on it in 10 years and realize it was for the best for both sides.

YOu could say the same thing about SLU, Travis Ford had one bad year and got canned. Before this year he had 4 20+ win seasons in a row, not counting the covid year, an NCAA bid and two NIT's and he got canned. He had arguably been a LOT more successful than Mullins had been.

@salukiworld your missing my point.  I know why he got canned.  But as an outsider ( which I am trying to say what an outsider may think). When a potential coach looks at a future job. He looks at a plethora of different things.  One is why did the last coach get canned. He sees that 42 wins in 2 years and is let go. As an outsider I don’t looked at his schedule and and how he did against teams in his career. I see 42 wins and being let go.
It is a legitimate question that I would ask myself. Is this a place I want to coach at?

I'm heartened that we're almost at 1000 posts about the coaching change. It's nice to be among a fanbase that cares. That said, Missouri State has hit 1,100 in less time so PICK IT UP, LOSERS. Haha. Can we just hire a coach already  . . . a good one.

You underestimate the egos of head coaches. They think they've got it all figured out most of the time so who cares what happened to the last guy. There's only so many D1 gigs.
