Per Heff and SIU Twitter - Sekou out with a broken left tibia. Done for the season.

How many medical redshirts can one guy get? Serious question.

feel bad for the kid. hope he mends well.
what is the deal with Jeremic? is he seriously injured?
Craving a McBride Special!
That's a shame for Sekou. Anybody know about Jeremic? We're going to need some minutes from him.
Ugh. What a drag for everyone, especially him.
As if this team didn't have enough on its plate already.
(Inflammatory political snark)
jeremic is day to day with ankle sprain

Who would you rather see spelling Benson at the 5 the rest of the way ... Brendon Gooch or Stevan Jeremic? Light up the phone lines! 😖
I'd hate to see Domask forced to play out of position there and take him out of his rhythm by getting beat up by other teams' post bruisers.
Davis has played some at the 5 spot.
I think this is a bigger loss than Cook going forward because of the lack of big man depth and there’s nobody that really benefits from this unlike some of our younger guards who got to play and develop more quickly when Cook went down. Dembele was raw out there and wasn’t making too big of a difference but the time he’ll lose by not being on the court in games and practices just extends his development into his Sophomore and Junior seasons.

It also leaves the coaching staff not really knowing what, if anything, they can count on from Dembele going forward, both because of how raw he is skills-wise and his injury history (he also had that stress fracture that kept him out at the start of the season).
I think they pretty much have to take the recruiting approach this spring that they have no returning bigs for next season and anything they get out of Dembele (or Jeremic, if he's still here) is a bonus.
If Dembele is granted a Medical Hardship Waiver (medical redshirt) he would get this season over again. He could still have 4 years of eligibility left for his college career beginning with the 2020-2021 season if that waiver is granted.
Dembele has participated in 10 games this season. SIU has 31 games scheduled, not counting the exhibition game, which puts him under the 30% limit. The problem could be that the Bradley game was the 18th game of the year and puts Dembele participating after the halfway point of the season. How the games are counted in the multi team event, that the Dawgs participated in this year in Florida, is unknown to me. Those three games are counted as 1 game for NCAA scheduling. Not sure how those games would impact the game count for a medical hardship waiver. If the MTE counts as 1 game then Dembele's injury occurred in the 15th game of the season. Counting one game in the MVC Tournament, which is guaranteed, the Dawgs will have played at least 30 games this season when counting the MTE as 1 game. The Bradley game was the 15th game and therefore was the halfway point of this season.
Eric McGill received a medical hardship waiver for the 2017-2018 season when he had participated in 10 games. The injury that ended Eric's season occurred in the 10th game of the season and was clearly under the halfway point of the 32 game season that year.
An NCAA athlete has a 5 year or 10 semester window of opportunity to complete their eligibility. This rule has been individually reviewed and extended in the past to allow a 6th year of eligibility for many athletes that had a red shirt year and season ending medical hardship waiver. There have also been many individual cases were an athlete has had two medical waivers granted during their college career, thereby granting them a 6th year of eligibility.
NCAA Division I – An athlete must not have participated in more than three contests or 30 percent of their season schedule (whichever is greater) and not after the halfway point of the season (based on the number of contests rather than a particular date).
I would never argue that he isn't an athletic and physical specimen who has raw talent, but I really hadn't seen anything too promising from Dembele this year. He did seem to improve as the year went on with his positioning but marginally so. That being said, not having that body there to come in and spell Benson allowing the other, shorter, wings to play their traditional spots on the floor will hurt this team for the remainder of the year.
At the same time, the goal of this season remains...…………improvement from the core that will pay dividends for the next 2, 3 + years. I know one thing for sure, this coaching staff will not be using his absence as a crutch or an excuse. They are still going to ensure that the remaining guys are accountable.

Check your math. 10/31 is 32%
If you're gonna reply to me in the forums, please quote what I wrote that you're replying to so I have a clue...thanks! 😀

Good catch! I obviously failed math...
This is a tough one for Sekou and for the team. His development the rest of the way was vital, not just for this year, but so Mullins and staff would know more about what they have post-Benson.
I'd say that now the coaching staff is putting an even greater emphasis on bringing in an impact big for next season. I highly doubt Jeremic will be back next year. It's an absolute shame that the Clemson transfer William didn't stick around. If he had and would've been granted a waiver (assuming his health concerns were a thing of the past), things may have looked entirely different.
