what ever you do don’t talk common sense on this site! People would much rather speculate on their own thoughts than what generally happens.
You’re kidding right. Do you not live in the real world? Have you never recruited or hired anyone? Have you never had a private conversation/agreement with anyone before. There is no way during the hiring process anyone involved would have given any indication Mullins is in major trouble or that Howard would be hired as a possible replacement due to a future Mullins firing. Not only would that be a terrible message to send to any perspective candidate, it would also give the appearance of a program in disarray. No one would want to walk into a situation like that. Also, it would set up a potentially horrible dynamic between the head coach and new assistant coach. Did not, and would not have happened.@mr_woogers Howard may be around for a while. By all reports Howard is a very good family man. C’dale is not too bad a place to raise kids. He also may have been promised the HC job as soon as BM coaches himself out of it in only a couple more years.
Everyone is wondering how we got somebody like Howard. A private ‘back room’ conversation could be how it happened.
Did it happen? None of us could possibly know. I can’t say it did. But, none of you little ladies can say it didn’t.
I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!
I'm pretty sure when it comes to this particular scenario no back room deals or conversations were involved. That would reflect very badly upon the leadership of the university and athletic department. I'm quite sure I'm living in the real world when it comes to this particular situation. Sure, in some other circumstances it happens, but I would bet any amount of money it didn't happen in regards to the Howard hiring. A more likely scenario as to how SIU landed Howard is that a booster or boosters outside the university are supplementing Howards salary making it a competitive enough offer. You’re kidding right. In a previous life, I was a college scout. I worked for a company that scouted for colleges, both football and baseball for ten years. I met with thousands of players, their families, and coaches— both high school and college. This was years ago, before the NIL, so private agreements were all under the table. Extremely common place. I assure you, it happened all the time. And with AD’s and coaches that you would not expect. Maybe my history has made me a little too cynical, but I guaran GD tee it, it’s still happening all the time in the coaching ranks. Did it happen with Howard? I have no idea. Is a booster paying him? I have no idea. Like I said, I‘ve seen it before.I'm pretty sure when it comes to this particular scenario no back room deals or conversations were involved. With Shannon and now Hawkins returning to Illinois, plus the other transfers and returning players, the Illini bench is starting to become pretty crowded. Last I saw, they are also still in the running for RayJ Dennis.

Think RayJ is going to Baylor, he'll announce in about 45 minutes. They're still a point guard short of doing anything, will be interesting to see what their back-up option is.
Here's the back-up option, it's a guy we had a chance at out of High School
The picture is so funny to me - Temple Jersey, Iowa State listed under his name, in a U of I frame lol
Terrance Shannon Jr returns to Illinois for his final year and Marcus Domask may be in real trouble for playing time.
Slightly confused whey we're following Illini recruiting on an SIU forum. Sorry, but I dislike the Illini as much as Barkeep despises Bradley.
Illini posts should be limited to discussing their crackpot head coach and the fact that they haven't gotten out of the first weekend of the tourney in 18 years.
