I have no ill will towards Marcus or Lance they took the information available at the time considered their options and did what they thought was best for them presently and their future who among us would not improve their own situation good luck to both

They were here four years, got their degrees, played their butts off, and now they want to see how they do against better competition. Don't blame them a bit. Hope they both do well. Great Salukis!

I generally agree, and Domask and Jones are good kids, but a star player staying with one franchise or school throughout their career does increase the nostalgic effect later on.  If Domask ends up being an SIU hall of famer, doesn't it have more meaning if he finished up at SIU instead of at another school?  Brett Favre ending up at Minnesota or Aaron Rogers at the Jets seems half inappropriate.  Tom Brady kinda pulled it off by winning another Super Bowl, but the legacy with the Patriots is slightly tarnished.  Overall, you can't blame them for trying out their skills at Big 10 schools, so let's hope that experiment plays out well for both of them.

To add on to this, when Domask plays professionally (NBA a longshot, but not entirely out of the question) he'll forever be listed as an Illinois product on broadcasts, graphics, etc. Kind of sucks.

Well, I’ve stayed quiet on this particular subject - partly in self-defeat, partly in sadness at what college athletics has become, and partly because of disgust at what college athletics has devolved into…

Hell, I suppose I’ve stay quite too because if felt that if I didn’t give any attention to it, I will wake up from this long nightmare and I’ll find it was just a mirage.

This nightmare where 21 year old young men can uproot themselves from a program - so damn suddenly -  in which they have been so embedded. Think about a selfish decision being made - and on a dime, at the drop of a hat, that can potentially nose dive a grown man’s (aka head coaches) job/career.**

**(this is not bringing into account any of Mullins’ shortcomings or his coaching ability at all, which he is obviously responsible for and is ultimately where the buck stops. I digress for the subject matter of this particular post.)

Marcus Domask should have been holding little baby Salukis for photo ops as he made reappearances at Banterra Center throughout the decades to come.  He should have been representing Southern Illinois University at the “next level,” whether that be the NBA or overseas pro ball. He should have been telling the Saluki story, not the “All you have to do is make first-team, and the P5’s will come calling. (Literally, they’ll call you everyday for the month of February directly after practice let’s out, probably).

Domask was a top Saluki and he is forever an SIU alum with that bachelors degree, but just put #1 up in the rafters for Darren Brooks and call it a day.

I would never be so petty of a man that I wouldn’t wish someone good luck in their future, I mean, it’s just good manners and in good faith….. So here I go —- Good Luck with your new teams, Marcus and Lance, and Good Luck with your future endeavors. I hope you do well.

But, I don’t think there’s any way I can root for them. I mean, that’s my fucking school that they turned their back on. If you drive for 20 miles straight on Route 51, the very next turn that you make is to the Arena. I used that parking lot when I was in school, and on my way to class I would bump my fist on King Tut’s tomb just like the football players. That’s my fucking place.

This whole transfer portal era is out of control. The big man for Michigan is unhappy and wants to go to Kansas!?? It’s fucking Michigan, dude?

Mid-major guys want to go the P5’s because they want to play in the tournament? Then how about helping getting your mid-major team - you know, the program that began recruiting you when you were 16 years old - there?  oooooh, the deck is stacked against us…..enough! Be a noisy little shit and go out there and get it.

Barkeep began a thread recently venting Bradley hate, but, as a Missouri Valley and mid-major fan, I can’t afford to hate a Valley team the way that, say, a Duke fan can hate North Carolina. You see, UNC can be despised by all, but they’re a $300,000,000 athletic department within a billion dollar University. They’ll be fine, and they’re centainly in no danger of ever falling off the map, even if they were to have a poor basketball decade. But the Bradley’s and SIU’s of the college (athletics) landscape need all the fan support and funds they can reap. Because they need to be get in - and then stay in- the spotlight for stability, and, even more so, growth.

Now I have to host Saturday morning coffees with family and friends who are going to rehash about “the Illini game last Wednesday,” while my Salukis are going to be dead in the water from the start.

Nothing less than a fucking shame.

My friend and I, when high-school aged, used to jokingly exclaim, “These ho’s ain’t loyal!” 😝……

Now, about 15 years later, we put a slight spin on it: “These ballplayers ain’t loyal!” 😡

Great thoughts. Because Marcus and Lance played hard for us for 4 years and they're good kids, I hope they do well, but I agree their legacy with SIU is definitely a bit tarnished. I will always put guys like Darren Brooks and Jamal Tatum and Randall Falker above them.

I don't blame them as much as I blame the portal . The portal (and the NIL) is an awful thing for college sports in so many ways.

Legacy and loyalty left the building years ago especially in pro sports as players chase money not their standing as a team icon Pujols with the Cardinals and LeBron James in general come to mind

I hate that out of 300-plus universities he had to pick Illinois.

But I hope he personally does well for them.

In the end, Domask ultimately did the SIU basketball program a pretty big favor.

If Domask had returned with others, the Salukis win 20 again and Mullins gets an extension.

I do not want another 3 or 4 years of what we have all been watching the past 4.

Supporter of the Fab 4: Scottie Ebube, Foster Wonders, AJ Ferguson & Cade Hornecker.

They’re the ones that can get us where we haven’t been in 15 years.

Marcus worked his butt off here for 4 years. I hope Marcus does well and they lose 25 games.

Agree the portal and NIL are destroying some aspects of college basketball such as school loyalty. But its all about the money. It has been for the NCAA,Universities,Conferences for some time. Athletic competition is merely a vehicle. Hot dog eating would replace college hoops for these organizations if the money were there.

The NIL (and portal) in the context of greed that is college basketball is actually a positive movement because it frees the victims of years of servitude, the athletes, to enjoy some of the profits.

As for student athletes following the money, who among us would not love to be paid as much as possible for doing the things we love to do?

I absolutely agree that it's fairer for the athletes, but I think servitude is a bit too strong of a word. They are getting a free college education and that cost a lot of money nowadays.

Big money, TV money, outrageous salaries for coaches, Etc is the driving force that has really corrupted college athletics. When a TV network like ESPN schedules your games for you, you know something's bass ackwards.

I am really amazed at how worked up people get over pro teams. I mean they change personnel constantly and the big stars change teams for obscene money. How can you have any loyalty to that? I can see having loyalty to your city maybe or just out of tradition because you rooted for a team for years, but I have lost a lot of interest in pro sports over the years because of the crazy money and the lack of stability. I still watch occasionally just because the level of skill is amazing.

Now that money and other craziness is moving into college sports and it's really a shame.

@siu-grad-87 I would not assume that this is BM's last year  - even with a mediocre record. I'll also be surprised if Jerrance Howard stays here more than this year.

@mr_woogers Howard may be around for a while.  By all reports Howard is a very good family man.  C’dale is not too bad a place to raise kids.  He also may have been promised the HC job as soon as BM coaches himself out of it in only a couple more years.

I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!

There is no way during the hiring process anyone involved would have given any indication Mullins is in major trouble or that Howard would be hired as a possible replacement due to a future Mullins firing. Not only would that be a terrible message to send to any perspective candidate, it would also give the appearance of a program in disarray. No one would want to walk into a situation like that. Also, it would set up a potentially horrible dynamic between the head coach and new assistant coach. Did not, and would not have happened.
