I will say, I don't think SIU even played that bad. I didn't think they played great but when your opponent hits 17-29 3's, you're not gonna win many games.
When you give up as many open looks as we did to a good outside shooting team, you are going to get burned by it often. Thank goodness they had no inside game to complement it or we could have lost by 30.

I agree, and again I'll say that not all of those 3s they hit were wide open; some were well defended. (And they actually missed some wide-open 3s--you don't want to hang your hat on shooting 3s to win.)
(Inflammatory political snark)
I have to admit I have not been that impressed with SIU's defense so far this year. Some things are understandable with the second chance points as they aren't a good rebounding team but the man defense and effort along with switching and help has been bad all year and not what I would expect from a Mullins team.
Why are we not getting the ball in the post to our best player ?
Because we are too busy posting Lance Jones at the 5. Atrocious.
And Filewich and Dembele played well around the rim today...should have kept feeding them.
Greg Starrick: only 13 total shots..only 4 in the 2nd half..... for Marcus Domask.... just not enough!
Sometimes you just get beat. Evansville played great. They rained bombs on us for 40 minutes.

They're learning but certainly not a Falker.Tatum.Young.Mullins D by any means!
BMull disappointed in the D and the effort today! Takes the blame!
Drake had better get an angry, motivated Saluki team on Sunday.
Congrats to Evansville.
Awful defense and terrible shot selection in the second half. Evansville got hot and exposed Southern's D.
I'm fuming that SIU was the team that Evansville snapped their losing skid against...

Very poor effort for the Dawgs immaturity exposed. Congratulations Evansville they earned it

First off, I will tip my top hat to the Purple Aces, who shot the absolute piss out of the ball tonight. And Curtis' arrival is a big boost for them. Still think they're a Thursday team, probably 8th or 9th.
From a defensive standpoint, there are a couple shortcomings with SIU's personnel. They don't have an athletic shot-blocker and rebounding beast in the paint (that will change next year with Muila and hopefully Ebube, the recruit from Mundelein. I will give Dembele credit for some good moments tonight). The other issue, though, is they don't really have a long, athletic wing that really makes it tough on 3-point shooters, and I don't know that there is an answer to that missing piece.
That said, SIU has a lot of talent onboard, especially from an offensive standpoint, so admittedly it's a greedy gripe. 😀
I am hoping Domask can shift to the wing at some point. SIU is small inside too which doesn't help.
And D'Avanzo doesn't really help there, either.
Back to reality. Gut punch not fun to take, but hope the Dawgs use it to work harder and correct some of the D problems. Congrats to E for getting off the schneid...now beat up on the rest of the league.
Bryan Mullins postgame:
The reality is that SIU is the better team, but Evansville shot the lights out of the ball tonight. That doesn't change the fact that this loss will likely really hurt this team come final standings time.
