Warms my heart to see Illini getting hammered again.  They got rid of Bruce why?

Oops. Lol

Oh well.   😫

Still should have kept BW.

Let's see-not Bill Self.

Wouldn't sell his soul to the devil to get recruits.  Anyone who believes that program was clean in the Lou Henson era also believes in the Easter Bunny.  It was questionable in the brief Self era.

Unrealistic expectations of their fan base.  They always believe they are a blue blood, when in fact Illinois is one of the most underachieving programs in the country, especially when you consider their recruiting base.

Weber is a good coach, I like him and hate Illinois, but he went 41-49 in conference his last 5 years at Illinois.  I dont think it is entirely unreasonable to want to punt a guy when he is going sub-.500 in conference.

Part of the reason is he micromanaged players during games.  The other part is the early success really didn't translate into recruiting success.  And Bruce won't play the games needed to recruit Chicago.

Someone doing good later doesnt mean they were doing good where they were.  Joe Torre lit the world on fire as manager of the Yankees, that doesnt mean any of the other 3 teams that had employed him and then fired him made the wrong decision.  A situation can just be the wrong situation for a given coach and team, if the coach finds a better situation later that doesnt make the past situation good

Weber's last 5 years:

98-73 .573 41-49 .456 2 NCAA, 1 NIT

Groce:
95-75 .559 37-53 .411 1 NCAA, 3 NIT

It isnt like they fell off a cliff.

See you cant actually defend his job performance at Illinois.  He is a good coach, that doesnt change the fact he was treading water there.  You mock Groce then ignore the fact his performance at Illinois is pretty damn close to what Weber was doing his last 5 years there.  If Groce is a hack why is it ok Weber was putting up that job performance?

National coach of the year at Illinois

national title game at Illinois

big ten coach of the year at Illinois

got the carpet pulled out from underneath him by a bad bad AD or I think another NCAA appearance .

The team he left Groce is the only team that Groce took to the NCAA

taken 3 teams to the sweet 16. 2 teams to the elite 8

coach if the year in the MVC,Big 10 and big 12.

So again GTFO.  Groce can not hold Weber’s jock in any way

No sh*t Groce cant hold Weber's jock, the point isnt that Groce is as good as Weber the point is Weber was doing mediocre the last 5 years of his time there.  Good coaches can flounder, situations can go bad, you mock Illinois for dumping him but ignore that he really wasnt doing much there any more.  Once again by the numbers there really wasnt too much difference between Weber's last 5 and Groce's era.  It was one sea of mediocrity.    The situation had gone south for Weber and Illinois.

Same thing for Texas.  Shaka is a good coach, that doesnt mean the situation is working or that Texas should keep him forever if the results arent there

It's impossible to not acknowledge that Webers best years have always came with Chris Lowery on staff.  If Illinois had kept him and they had added Chris back to the staff after Mario forced him out here, one would certainly believe they would have had a few Big 10 titles and better success in the postseason  during recent years.
