but this year, they look like they will be a good team, so I'm gonna give the team and players the benefit of the doubt. They're doing pretty well against UK, who is decidedly overrated, but still. The team isn't anywhere close to awful.
I do agree that BH is a huckster, more effective at spinning than coaching. But they did finish 2nd last year to a very, very good team and they will be better this season. I think.
as a contrast, UCSB has done a great turnaround job since last season, and there's unanimous support for Pasternack, despite his alleged ties with the NCAA scandal. And yet, we're only expected to finish in the top 150, not 100, like SIU.
I guess it's all relative. UCSB is on the rise with their recruiting, while SIU may be on the decline next season. It's just UCSB's head coach as 99% approval, while BH looks like he has maybe 20% approval?

"It's just the guys in the basement eating Cheetos in their underwear that just drive me nuts, that make all the anonymous postings. I hate those guys." - Barry Hinson, Feb. 22, 2017
I would also suggest that you relisten to the epic rant after the Murray State game.
I would suggest that you relisten to this rant after the Loyola game Feb 25, 2017, at the 4 minute mark.

Barry Hinson was fired at Missouri State for very similar results.
Only took Barry 6 years how to coach a team. Had these guys prepared and ready to play tonight. I feel bad for Fletch and getting hosed on some foul calls. He was the difference maker in the game with his length and scoring ability, though we get out rebounded by 25+ and gave up way too many second chance points. Extremely impressed with the way Aaron Cook played, he had grit and was not intimidated one bit.
This team will be bounce back and be ready to roll vs Buffalo on Monday.
Great job by the Dawgs, how do you have your best player on the floor with 4 fouls with 9 minutes to go? Barry comment was "with our short bench"
He could feel the momentum shift in favor of UK, I can't really fault him for that. I'm sure he trusted his senior out there with 4 fouls and Fletcher was probably hounding him to be put back in the game with 4 fouls.
As this was our only Power 5 opponent this year (unless the postseason presents an opportunity), Hinson will still be searching for his first power conference W at Southern heading into Year 8.

Brendon Gooch is a third-year sophomore who redshirted a year to be ready for this opportunity. He didn't play one second tonight and Barry still says "short bench" with a healthy Gooch sitting down there. If he's still not ready, he should have been told to transfer so that scholarship could've been used for someone who could've played tonight.
Very impressed by our players and thought our coaching was spot on. Number 2 team in the nation at their place in front of a huge crowd, a team that just came off of a terrible loss.... good showing by the Salukis. Should be a fun season. Listen, haters always gonna hate - don't let that spoil your winter fun with this team
I agree I think they’ll be decent this year, but I can’t shake apathy. I think the biggest reason is it truly doesn’t feel like we are building towards anything here. Based on the roster make up and Hinsons historical recruiting it feels like this is going to be a one year upswing then right back into the toilet at best
and that’s the extra apathetic inducing part, if our one year upswing was dominating the valley and waltzing into the NCAA it would be one thing, but I feel our upswing is going to be MAYBE get a NIT spot. I don’t know, even excluding Hinson himself being repulsive the whole thing just can’t get me too excited
Maybe it isn’t hate. Maybe there’s still room to have legitimate criticism. One example is the rebounding, especially since it will be key to beat Buffalo at home.
If we go back to say “any objective criticism is hate” the bad feelings will resume quickly.
Sure, we could cut back on the Hucky and Chester Cheetos references, I have said as much myself. I’m trying to avoid that talk altogether this year. But if all that can be done is cheerleading without any shred of objectivity, what’s the point of online discussion? Maybe we should try to find the happy medium instead.
Wow! That's true. We didn't see Gooch on the floor tonight. That's a bummer for him. If he's not progressing, it doesn't bode well for the Salukis.
Man, what a difference a week makes. 😞
Man, what a difference a week makes. 😞
It is not THAT different. A handful of somewhat talented players with a weak coaching staff. They will win their 17 to 20 games, some against dreadful competition, and that will be that.
Does anyone, even the biggest homer and Hinson fluffer on here, think SIU will actually win the MVC regular season championship?
Hell, no.

Hinson hasn't changed since his days at Missouri State, play a weak schedule, get the team in the top half of the league, suck up to the big donors, and keep the programs that he coaches competitive and just good enough to keep his job. Media people love him and casual fans do to but the observant fan that expects the program to compete at the highest level sees through his fake crap. I will always root for SIU to win and root for the kids, but I will be pleasantly shocked if Hinson the Dean of the Valley actually wins either a conference regular season title or a MVC tournament championship. After 17 season in the Valley with no championship team to his name I don't see it happening. I truly hope that I have to eat my words.
