I realize this is a fool's errand with so many newcomers and not knowing how guys are looking in workouts, etc., but since it's a quiet time on the calendar: what would your ideal starting five be for next season? (Not what you think is most likely, but what you would like to see).
Mine:
G - Xavier Johnson
G - Trey Miller
F - Kennard Davis
F- Troy D'Amico
C- Scottie Ebube
And then my first few guys off the bench would be Rupert, Ferguson, Stulic and McGee. I'm not as optimistic about Hensley as some probably are but I'm sure he'll factor in the rotation, as will Brown, if he can find his stroke. Not as confident about Hornecker and Sharp cracking the rotation but open to a pleasant surprise from one or both.
Lots of options to mix and match, and I'm good with whatever direction they go as long as they don't give unwarranted preference to veterans over younger players with more upside (see Newton playing 20+ minutes much of last season). And they're going to have to find ways to give big minutes to guys who can actually put the ball in the basket this year if they want to hit 60 points with any regularity.
I'm guessing we'll start the season with something like this:
Johnson
Miller
Ferguson
D'Amico
Rupert
I think Davis comes off the bench for Ferguson, Miller moves to point for 7 or 8 minutes to spell Xavier, McGee and Stulic get minutes at the 2 and maybe a little at the 3. Hensley spells D'Amico at the 4 and hopefully Ebube gets at least 15 minutes at the 5 as backup to Rupert. Agree Sharp and Hornecker would most likely be biggest candidates to be out of the rotation, with a chance that Sharp redshirts. I think McGee could break out and get more minutes at the 2 and possibly 3. I fear Brown will get too many minutes backing up the 2.
5) Ebube/Hornecker
4) Rupert/Hensley
3) D’Amico/Davis/Ferguson
2) McGee/Stulic/Brown
1) Johnson/Miller/Sharp
That would be my depth chart, with Sharp possibly red-shirting. Still a little weak at 2G unless somebody steps up. Pretty solid everywhere else.
X, McGee, D Amico, Rupert, Hornecker.
Davis from what I hear is very good, especially defensively, but he is I believe a freshmen. Not so sure Mullins will start a true frosh. Domask started, but there weren't as many options as this current team displays. Interesting to speculate in mid July however.
GO DAWGS!!!
Some will want the biggest lineup.
Some will want the most athletic lineup.
Some will want the most versatile lineup.
I don't care who plays, just as long as the most deserving players do and ones that give us the best chance at winning games.
5) Ebube/Hornecker
4) Rupert/Hensley
3) D’Amico/Davis/Ferguson
2) McGee/Stulic/Brown
1) Johnson/Miller/Sharp

This is exactly my dream for distribution of minutes and positions. I am unfortunately skeptical that this staff would ever go for this. 🙁
(Inflammatory political snark)
They better be able to effectively use their best players and play to their strength, otherwise this fan base is going to get extremely impatient…..including this fan.5) Ebube/Hornecker
