SIU opens their 2023-24 regular season with Division II Kentucky State on Monday.
Meet the Thorobreds:
Kentucky State is a historically black land-grant university located in Frankfort, KY. They have an enrollment of 1,726 as of Fall 2022
The Thorobreds are coached by Jamaal Jackson in his 8th year as head coach. Last season, the team went 15-13 and were led by 6-6 Senior Forward Kong Kong, who is now playing for the OKC Blue G League team.
The team went through a lot of turnover this offseason losing a bunch of Seniors like Kong (9.9 PPG), Montrell Jacobs (15.4 PPG), Jalon Andrews (12.3 PPG), and Jay Murrell (12.9 PPG).
In their exhibition game against Kentucky on Thursday, the Thorobreds lost 99-53. 6-4 Sophomore Josiah Mitchell led Kentucky State in scoring with 10 points on 4-11 shooting.

I’m not optimistic about this year, but I’ll be there for this one and am looking forward to it.

SIU Game Notes
Kong Kong? That's a name in search of a dirty limerick!! LOL
Should be a fun game to watch where our players look good and fans get excited. I am looking forward to seeing these guys on the court and hopeful the freshmen can get some meaningful minutes and showcase their skills.
Davis is the only freshman who could play with Sharp sidelined with his foot injury. In fact, assuming Hensley is not cleared, only 10/13 scholarship guys are available, with Hornecker also out.
Very curious about all of it: the starting lineups (suspecting Brown will get the nod based on his ... intangibles?), the rotations off the bench, how D'Amico and Johnson look coming off their injuries, and which newcomers can make a good first impression.
If Mullins needs any last-minute bulletin board material, one of the two guys on the March to the Arch podcast picked SIU 11th, behind Evansville, in the latest episode. Ouch.
Hard to believe basketball is almost here. This is an awesome time of year when there’s both college basketball and football.
Any guesses as to attendance tomorrow night? I know we’ve had a pretty good showing in years past, but fans have to expect a pretty big step back this year, and I wonder if that shows up in ticket sales.
My prediction is that the following players impress:
AJ Ferguson
Trey Miller
Kennard Davis
Anybody guessing what the starting line-up will be ? I’m going with:
X, Trent, AJ, Troy and Clarence
Good guess, sub Miller for Trent and you have it.Anybody guessing what the starting line-up will be ? I’m going with:

Here's mine (and I'd be willing to bet money on it)! 😉
5) Rupert
4) D'Amico
3) Ferguson
2) Miller
1) X
Can Hensley play until the staff gets clarification whether he is eligible or does he have to sit out until the clarification
No, he has to be cleared before he can play. Can Hensley play until the staff gets clarification whether he is eligible or does he have to sit out until the clarification

This is my guess as well. That being said, it is unimportant to me (in THIS game) who starts. I'm more interested in who plays well, plays meaningful minutes (although the assumption is that this will not be a competitive game) and who potentially separates themselves from the others. I am in particularly interested in Davis and Ebube.
