The player can tell the coaches he doesn't want to redshirt, but he doesn't get to choose his minutes. You could play him 7 minutes all season and blow a year of eligibility...OR you could keep him planted on the bench and force his hand to accept the redshirt year. I'm not sure what benefits come from the first option that we chose.
As awful as this sounds, it is likely a benefit to a mid major for players to NOT redshirt. That 5th year is very very likely to be used as a grad transfer to a higher level school. The redshirt used to be a tool for the mid majors to catch up to the high majors but I really don't think it does much good anymore.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but it's certainly a fair point. I hate the way the landscape of college basketball has changed.
