Let’s sit back and think who votes on conference expansion decisions….the school presidents. We can argue all we want but to sit here and think the presidents are saying “ who is the best basketball fit”, without taking anything else into consideration….would be lying to ourselves. I think the presidents are more concerned with keeping The Valley a more prestigious conference in relation to graduation rates, types of institutions , etc. So combining these things puts Murray down the list….just looking at graduation rates we can eliminate a few schools even from the conversation.

Long time lurker, been involved in season tickets for last 15 or so years. Just consider my self a realist and know a little bit about the game. I want what is best for the conference, but just not sure where my confidence level is at with certain presidents of the conference. Was told by a pretty reliable source that a certain president was wanting funding for athletics to drop down to SWAC levels and each individual team to fund raise to make up the difference. If that is true, athletics isn’t too high on their priority list.
I hate to pop your bubble, but, although I'm sure any college president is concerned about academic rep, as far as I know the MVC is just an athletic conference. Not sure that Murray State academics would kill their chances. And the argument that one bad coach would kill them? Nah! They're not going to put up with a Barbeque salesman nearly as long as we did.
Some athletic conferences also have academic consortiums. The Big 10 has had such a thing since the 50's and those schools cooperate on research agendas, etc. I don't believe the MVC has any such thing. Yes it has academic honor rolls - what conference doesn't? - but it's just about athletics. And basketball is the one sport that brings in money.
CBS would love Maury St at Arch Madness.
"As for the Missouri Valley's potential new members, the appeal for Murray State is clear and most obvious. It's one of the most accomplished mid-major programs in men's basketball, with 17 NCAA Tournament appearances to its name. The school previously failed to win its campaign to join the Valley in 2017, when league presidents picked Valparaiso over the Racers. Since then, Murray State has gone 92-33 under Matt McMahon, won an NCAA Tournament game, made two NCAA Tournaments and produced the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Ja Morant. The only thing holding back Murray State was its remote location and lack of being in a metropolitan area. That appears to no longer be a sticking point for MVC presidents. "
Hopefully we'll find out next week.
If it was “only” about basketball would the whole private vs public wouldn’t really be an issue. I think you aren’t giving enough thought to the presidents having the power. I could see it if it were the ADs but presidents have a lot more on their plates than what schools make the conference better basketball wise. I don’t see the presidents of these universities wanting to add say a Northern Kentucky with a graduation rate of 35%. Academics and other things will play a part....it will not just be a basketball decision. Don’t get me wrong if they choose to add Murray....me being a basketball fan, I’m ok with that....however I feel those making the decision will go a different direction.

I think bball IS the overriding factor and the most public face of this league, but market and other factors certainly have something to do with it. The public-private thing is probably why Valpo is in the MVC. With Belmont replacing Loyola, we'll be 5 and 5, but it sounds like the other schools being considered are all public - UTA, MSU, and UMKC.
Maybe the private school prezs are fine with just Belmont and keeping it 5 & 5. Just speculating.
I think having UIC (and the Chicago market) is hugely important for the future of the MVC. One thing for sure IMO, we shouldn't be bigger than 12 and UMKC shouldn't be in the MVC at this point. Not crazy about UTA either.
@austinsaluki Bum is being creative in his hatred of Murray St - Maury St, Murrie St!
(Maybe his middle name is Murray and he's ashamed of it! LOL)

It's weird as fuck.
(Inflammatory political snark)
Give me one reason besides being a decent basketball team MSU should be in the MVC. Just one is all I’m asking for.
Also of those 17 NCAA appearances how many of those happen if they are in the Valley ? 2 or 3 maybe

that's all you got old man?

Your logic assumes that the Valley will perpetually / forever be a 1-bid league; ultimately adding a quality basketball program to the mix will only increase the average KenPom/NET/RPI/etc rather than degrade.
Here's a great example of how adding a quality program increases the benefit for all: in recent memory I can think of 2 teams, Illinois State and Barry's MSU with Blake Ahearn, which nabbed low-40 RPIs but were left out of the tournament.
Now imagine two different possibilities for those seasons: 1 with Murray State and one with UTA / UMKC or even UIC. Maybe the Redbirds and the Barbecue Saucers get in with the former scenario, but maybe they don't; you can't deny though they likely get better chances at a higher RPI with Murray vs anyone else available today. With the alternate scenario I would argue it's likely they would have had a worse RPI.
You have to think of the non-con: that's where NETs get shaped, at least with their foundation, before entering Valley play where those all start to average out. You can either take someone like UMKC with a 200+ or a Murray with a < 100 or <125 that enters Valley play for the next 10 seasons; I know which one I'd take.

Also, this argument:
Also of those 17 NCAA appearances how many of those happen if they are in the Valley ? 2 or 3 maybe.
Making that argument means the only teams that would be worthwhile additions to the conference would be programs that come from BETTER conferences, since those teams would logically only be able to sustain or improve their level of conference titles / auto-bids. But we all know the Valley (unfortunately) isn't going to get a program from a higher-ranked conference.
Therefore, all of the prospective teams (UIC, UTA, etc.) fall under this same argument, and ironically Murray still remains the best possible candidate.

No I am saying all they bring is a decent basketball team. That is it
I am still waiting for anything else they would add to the MVC.

Thank you
