4718 deaths just under 128,000 known cases I don’t need the media for simple math that is .04 percent
not my fault Italy is full of really old people who smoke,
I want my damn March madness
the puts the fatality rate at a little under .04. Not counting unknown cases which is a very large number. That is actually less than the flu
Wait, how is that rate less than that of the flu?
When I do the math based on these figures, like you I see around 4 percent for corona.
But using figures for the worst case scenario (most virulent) for the flu from the CDC figures (52,000 deaths in 34 million cases), you get a death rate of 1.53 percent. When you use the best case scenario (least virulent) from the CDC figures (i.e., fewest number of deaths, most number of cases: 20K deaths, 49 million cases), you get a rate of around .04 percent.
So it would appear to be somewhere on a scale of (roughly) 2.5 to 10 times WORSE than the flu in terms of death rate. Again, the worst figures for flu virulence are at roughly 1.5 percent. In Italy, for one example of where figures have been kept for longer and that had a similarly slow response time, the rate is over 6 percent.
Sure, you're still more likely to die of the flu because of the greater rate of infection. But it doesn't mean this should be getting a baffled *shrug* about "hysteria." They're trying to contain this with these draconian measures to prevent possibly millions of deaths. And that is possible if NOTHING is done. Did the NCAA tournament need to get canceled? Classes on uni campuses throughout the country? I don't know. And neither does anyone, definitively. A lot of these actions are based on what has worked elsewhere, notably in Taiwan and Singapore, versus what has NOT worked (waiting until it's too late to prevent a bad outbreak and THEN taking these measures), notably in Italy and Iran.
Your last paragraph touched on it, and I'll reiterate for those saying coronavirus isn't as deadly as influenza; this virus is only in the beginning stages of spreading. Current data is very skewed. It could take months before an accurate comparison is made. That said, most infectious disease experts are estimating it will be 10 to 15 times deadlier than the flu.
If any of you are familiar with Micheal Osterholm's work, who's been spot on about this sort of thing for years, he gives a very sobering outlook on this whole situation in the months to come.

We're also very unsure at this point of all the potential risk factors that can make this more deadly for people. Yes, Italy is full of elderly and smokers, but the USA is the obesity capital of the world. People are right to be concerned. The problem here isn't the overreaction. It's that we waited far too long to properly act in the first place, on multiple fronts.

Maybe you are missing the part where I just want my damn March madness 😪

Thank you. The very idea that this is "nothing" is belied by the (belated) reaction to it. Stupid.
And if these (belated) measures work? "See? I todeja! There wasn't nothin to worry bout!

Barkeep, your math skills are really bad. Please recalculate.

This isn't me knocking anyone, but I highly encourage everyone to educate themselves because ignorance, especially in times like these, can be just as damaging as the virus itself.
Don't let lack of concern, or the mindset of 'this is not a big deal' be the reason you lose a loved one. Yes, it may not be a major risk to you, but to a parent, grandparent, sickly or weak it can be deadly. That fact can be made exponentially worse if we don't do everything we can to try and limit its spread. If we overwhelm medical facilities and personnel, you'll see just how bad this can get.
I'll miss the NCAA's too, but my greater concern is that we do what we can to help mitigate this issue.

Ah Christ I am old. Mostly just ranting but I am devastated
Crap! No NCAA tournaments. Best thing on TV all year (except for Better Call Saul starring Saluki Bob Odenkirk )
I don't think postponing until May would help. Guarantee you some players are gonna have Covid if not already!
