It's convoluted in these unprecedented times, but the way I understand it this year is a free year for everyone. It doesn't count against anyone's eligibility. Also, for all seniors wanting to return next year, their scholarships will not count against the usual standard max allotment (13) for all D1 teams. So, even though SIU projects to have 15 scholarship players, this will be perfectly normal and allowed next year so long as the university has the funds to cover the additional scholarships. That leaves the only real short-term issue being personnel logjams.

I was assuming the 13 scholly limit still applied, sounds like it does not. Regardless, I do not feel SIU would want to carry 15 basketball scholarships given their current financial situation. I do not think they were too upset they did not use the 13th scholarship this year, as they saved $'s by not using it on a non impact player. I would be very surprised if SIU had more than 13 scholarship players next year. If there are no scholarship repercussions with bringing folks back I would be in favor of bringing D'Avanzo back for depth at the 4 position. However, there would not be much value in bringing Butler, Long and Dembele back. Regardless, we still need 2 impact athletic 3's or 4's. I am thinking along the lines of players with the size and skill sets of players like Hemphill with Drake, Clay with Valpo and Childs with Bradley.

I believe you are correct!

The Senior scholarships will be above the 13 limit and will be only subject to the schools funding ability.

Even if SIU did not offer either D'Avanzo or Long a scholarship, they could return as walk ons with the granted extra year of eligibility while they finish their MBA's.  I would hope, both of those young men would want to finish the curriculum for their Master's Degree after investing a year to achieve it.

D'Avanzo and D'Amico are from the same high school!  This group could include Sayles if there are changes.

I can't imagine us not inviting D'Avanzo back.  He's been a good player for us this year.  Hell, he was SIU Player-of-the-Game yesterday.  I agree he shouldn't see any time at the 5 next year and he won't.  We should be stacked there with Filewich, Muila, & Ebube.

I'd love to see D'Avanzo and Domask start at the 3-4 spots.  That would be a line-up with some size.

Someone suggested D'Avanzo "backing up" D'Amico next year.  Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but that's just ludicrous to me.  From what I've seen, D'Amico is nowhere near ready to challenge a seasoned vet like D'Avanzo for playing time just yet.

I think it’s been a mixed bag for D’Avanzo. He’s had just as many clunkers as good games, if not more. He was supposed to be a stretch 4 and he has not shot it well from 3.

And as has been mentioned a lot, this team really needs to get more athletic and improve on the glass. Running it back with D’Avanzo doesn’t accomplish that.

I’m also skeptical about having more than 13 scholarship kids on the roster. Seems like a recipe for stunting young players’ growth and discontent about playing time.

It’ll be an interesting spring.

Lets assume we begin next year with a starting lineup of Filewich, D'Avanzo, Domask, Brown/Harvey/Verplancken, and Jones. If everyone's healthy, there's a significant athleticism boost coming off the bench, but that starting lineup outside of Lance isn't exactly explosive and is sorely lacking quickness and speed. Woof.

Also, with the logjam at the 2 and 3 positions and Mullins love of the four guard lineup, I have my doubts that D'Avanzo would be the pick of the litter over starting Domask at the 4 and whoever the breadwinners are between Brown/Wonders/Harvey/Verplancken.

I'm not saying I'm the biggest fan of the four guard look, but I think it's the most likely outcome given the way this roster's constructed.

It may well play out that way.

What I'd love to see as a starting 5 would be:

1-Jones

2-Wonders (if he can make a quick transition)

3-Domask

4-Impactful athletic JUCO or grad transfer in the 6-5 to 6-8 range

5-Muila

And then you could have a strong bench with Banks, Filewich, Brown, and whoever else comes back, plus D'Amico and Ebube.

Maybe Wonders isn't ready to start off the bat and there are different lineup permutations that could all work (like the athletic transfer being at the 2), but the bottom line is to hopefully put a team on the floor athletic enough to compete at a higher level and maybe snare an offensive rebound more than once every blue moon.

I like the look of that, but I worry how much we can expect from Muila coming off of basically two straight years of injury. Expecting him to start or play heavy minutes might be too much an ask, and Filewich hasn't exactly done anything to deserve demotion after earning the starting gig, so I'm guessing where he is now is exactly where he'll be at the start of next season.

We definitely need to get more athletic around Domask, Jones and Filewich.

Call me crazy, but...a player who I think is a real sleeper is Dembele. For one he has really beefed up his upper body, he runs the floor like a deer and he has a tremendous wingspan. For no more total minutes than he has played in his career, due to injuries, I think he has tremendous upside. I believe and Kyler could make quite a duo defending the paint.

OK, you're crazy.  He won't even be on the team next year!

I've really liked what I've seen from Dembele this year when he plays but it's pretty clear the injuries are still taking a toll on him and probably will for the rest of his career.  With Ebube and D'Amico coming in and Muila back next year, there's just not going to be minutes for him.  So it's either riding the bench or going somewhere where he can get minutes.

I know there are lots of people in love with playing a bigger lineup , but with all due respect any starting lineup that has domask starting anywhere other than the 4 isn’t happening.  When was the last time we had a starting lineup featuring someone his size playing the 3???? Obviously a lot can happen between now and the start of next year , but I would say the starting line up will be ,

jones at point , Domask at the 4 , Mulia at the 5 and the 2 and 3 will be filled by whoever ends up being the best 2 out of banks, Harvey, verplancken, and wonders

I don't particularly care whether Domask is at the 3 or the 4, but I would submit that rolling out Brown/Harvey/Verplancken at the 2/3 spots again isn't going to address the team's shortcomings/move the needle enough to contend next year.

If Domask is at the 4, you need a long, athletic wing guard in the mix, like Lucas Williamson who plays the 3 at Loyola and is an elite defender. And that's certainly a team/roster construction Mullins is very familiar with.

KenPom has player comparisons for every player in D1 based a range of stats, age, height, etc. Kind of funny Freshman Cameron Krutwig is showing up for Kyler Filewich
