I really don't follow recruiting much any more, but I agree, Bryan really needs to put his foot on the pedal and start bringing in better, more talented kids. There were way too many games last year that were painful to watch. We were just over matched in too many positions on the court.

It's tough in today's transfer portal climate.  I think the staff has been going after guys that might stay committed to SIU for 4-5 years as opposed to more talented players that might have a good season and look for a chance to move up a level.  It's amazing how many players I've seen hit the portal the last 2 years that we've recruited at one point.  Take a Jeremiah Williams for example who just transferred out of Temple for Iowa State.

We're gonna find out if they took the right path in the next 2 years with Jones & Domask being Seniors.

Almost didn't post this Salukiworld is one of the best posters on here. But Wow that's the first time I have heard this one. Bryan didn't even sign Jones. Sounds like a poor plan IF you end up getting fired because you didn't win.

That's not entirely true, sure he didn't originally sign him, but he is the one that convinced him to stay here when he got the job. Jones could have gone anywhere he wanted after BH was canned, but Mullins re-recruited him to stay.

I agree that Mullins has done a good job keeping Jones but that wasn't the point of the post. Salukiworld is saying that Mullins is trying to recruit guys that he feels will stay around and my point is Mullins didn't originally sign Jones.  I am really glad Jones has stayed, he could play at a lot of schools.

Agreed - Surely, without hard work and a good sell job, both Jones and Domask wouldn't be here, but the fact is that these 2 players (clearly our best 2 players) were more circumstantial signings than true recruits.  I'm still waiting for this staff to go after and sign a difference making (all Valley) player.

Something that I think people overlook too is how the kid feels about the school environment. I would bet some portal transfers aren't Only about the sport, playing time, etc. Might be social or academic issues too.

In Cook's case, it might just be adventurism, which for a young player is very understandable. He took a tour of the U.S.A.

LOL!

I would say that the sell jobs to keep Jones here and find and get  Domask are recruiting coups at least as valid as what you call "true recruits." Sorry, but that distinction is silly.

No need to be sorry, insult aside.  I didn't say getting those 2 to stay or come here wasn't important or impressive.  You fully understood my definition of a "true recruit".  Semantics aside, this staff has yet to recruit a 1st team all valley player.

Historically speaking, it takes awhile.

Oh, I got it; it's just that I reject the weird idea of "true recruit." 😆

Apparently Domask had surgery?

Apparently … the coverage of Saluki athletics has somehow gotten even worse since Heff left, and that was no easy task.

Just a guess, Domask had some hip problems last year.  He looked hurt for awhile but thought he looked healthy towards the end of the year

He played hurt the entire year. He gutted it out. If he is 100% healthy next year, look out!

That would explain a lot of what I was looking at.  I didn't think he played like he was healthy.  I mean, yeah, one is going to play hurt as the year goes on.  But this looked like something wasn't right.

The odd thing is I think Domask played some of his best ball the last 2-3 weeks of the season.

But it would be great to know things like what the deal is with his surgery, if Ben Harvey is planning to be back, any scheduling news (many teams have been linked to MTEs for next year), etc. The coverage in the SI has sunk to new depths, but hopefully Reis will do an interview with Mullins to hit on some of this stuff in the near future.

It’s funny you mentioned this, I actually wrote to the editor of The Southern expressing my sadness in how coverage of SIU sports in general has waned. Almost every other MVC school has a beat writer who writes stories on recruiting, spring football, the MVC at large, etc. Say what you want about Todd and him not having the connections within the program, but he would have covered a lot more than what we have right now. I don’t put this all on Bucky Dent either…they are asking him to do a lot with coverage of SIU and high school sports. I wish we could get someone like Wyatt Wheeler in Springfield or Todd Golden in Terre Haute or Paul Oren in Valparaiso. Paul Oren even left the paper to start a subscription based newsletter that focuses on all things Valpo athletics. I wish someone would start something like that for SIU…I have no problem paying for coverage of the teams I want to follow. Hopefully more on here would do the same. I still subscribe to The Southern, but if we got something like The Victory Bell newsletter going here I would be happy to support them too.

I thought Oren leaving the paper and doing a subscription website on Valpo Athletics was a losing move but I’d honestly pay for a similar SIU site at this point given the lack of coverage from The Southern.  Agreed it’s not all Bucky’s fault.
