@resaluki-88 I’m glad Mullins is doing the recruiting because there are some really bad takes on wonders on here. Especially consider domask came from a very small division with very little competition. Or any of the all valley players that uni gets from Minnesota or Wisconsin come from big divisions. Players are players.

@dunkledog I'm not saying I wouldn't have recruited Wonders, I would have! He has a great offensive skill set, good size and big offensive upside. However, I do not believe he is going to come in and have a huge impact initially. I do not think he will have the kind of impact Domask had his freshman year. This is because he looks slower than Domask did at this age (on film) and Domask did play tougher competition in AAU and HS than Wonders did. The speed of D1 is a huge adjustment for kids coming from the UP of Michigan. He looks slow on defense. Unless he gets a lot quicker he will get blown by every time by athletic mvc wings. I like to use Ben Harvey as an example. If Ben Harvey was quicker on defense he would be playing 35 minutes a game, just like Jones and Domask. Ben Harvey plays less than 25 minutes a game because he is slow on defense and at this point is still a significant defensive liability. This is after Ben Harvey has been in D1 basketball for 3 years, including his redshirt transfer year in which he was able to practice. I don't see Wonders coming in and playing huge minutes right away unless he somehow becomes exponentially quicker and better defensively. I'm sure he will be a good, and possibly great mvc player eventually. However, I do not expect it to happen right away. He may still get 10-15 minutes a game initially should his defense improve during summer workouts and pre-season practices. This is all pure speculation and I hope I'm wrong, but that's what I see based on the film I have watched.
Harvey is pretty darn good for just a sophomore; he has a really good offensive skill set, and you can't teach size with him being 6-5. To me he is a key piece to this team's long-term success; he has the potential to be an all-league player as an upper classman.

You’re viewing his season much more charitably than I did. He was not close to as polished as I was hoping for his third year in a DI program, based on the offseason hype. His offensive game was not there with any consistency against good competition, and his defense was ... not good.
In my view, he either needs to make major strides over the offseason or his minutes need to be up for grabs. This team needs to get more athletic to compete at a higher level.

Again, you are taking my post the wrong way. I like Harvey, I'm glad he is a Saluki. I think he does have a good offensive skill set and certainly has a role with us moving forward. If his defense improves he could conceivably be all valley. However, if his defense does not improve, his minutes will not increase and the coaches will not have him in the game at crunch time, as you saw in many circumstances during this season. I think Harvey's defense did improve some toward the end of the season, but it has a ways to go. I was using his minutes as a comparison to Wonders potential initial impact to show how important playing good defense is to the coaching staff and how it can affect a players minutes, even in the case of a veteran player like Ben Harvey.

Agree on his defense needing improvement, but I'm not sure how you're defining polished? Ben averaged 9.7 points per game this year, as a sophomore, and registered two 20+ point games with 22 against SEMO and 24 against Bradley in the tournament. He also averaged 38.4% from 3-point territory; that's a pretty good sophomore to have on hand IMO.
I just took a glance at SIU's season-ending stats. Here are a handful that caught my eye as the team considers some needed areas for improvement this offseason.
73 and 79. Lance Jones finished with 73 assists and 79 turnovers. Obviously Lance is a dynamic player who had some outstanding games, and I love watching him play, but he either needs to improve the assist-to-turnover ratio or play more off the ball if Southern is going to have major success. Dalton Banks' assist to turnover ratio was only marginally better, so this is a team-wide area for improvement ... it's just that Lance has the ball in his hands a lot, and at key times.
15. The highest season block total on the team (D'Avanzo). I think Thik Bol had half of that in one game against SLU. Speaks to the need to get more athletic (Muila and Ebube should help.)
6.9 PPG. Trent Brown was second on the team in average minutes (between Domask and Jones!) but sixth in scoring at 6.9 ppg, fifth in assists and near the bottom in rebounds. I'm NOT intending to bash Trent ... he does play very good defense for his size, has good intangibles and improved offensively from his freshman season. Nonetheless, for an MVC contender, I believe he's a scrappy bench contributor, not a 30-35 minute per game cog.
46%. Kyler Filewich's season FT percentage. Ouch, especially since he does a good job drawing contact and getting to the line. I love most of what we saw from Kyler, but I hope he spends 1/3 of the offseason in the weight room, 1/3 working on conditioning and 1/3 shooting free throws.
31. I'll end with a positive stat. Dalton Banks was second only to Jones in steals (31 for the season) despite coming off the bench. Like everyone on the roster, Dalton has some work to do on his game, but I really like his competitiveness and potential to become a floor leader going forward.
I'm excited about the trajectory of the program going forward and really like many of the current and incoming guys, both in terms of their play and their character, but there's work to do. Addressing some of these areas above could go a long way in getting the Salukis back in the mix of MVC contention, which is everyone's goal.

Not saying he didn't have some good moments, but I'm more interested in success against Loyola, Drake and Butler than SEMO, depleted Bradley and other lower-tier opponents. His main role was to score, and without Domask his scoring was more needed than ever, and the results were pretty spotty.

i guess my post was a little harsh so sorry about that. We are just not going to let silly guesses and Rumors take root. We have no issue discussing players as long as it is not unwarranted personal attacks.
At this time there has been nothing about Ben going anywhere. There are a couple guys who may not come back. Ben is not one of them.

All good. I apologize that my post seemed like I was trying to make a silly guess or whatever, should have worded it better
Those are all excellent takes backed up with statistics. I agree 100% with your roster/starting line-up evaluations for next year.
