Just a guess, Domask had some hip problems last year. He looked hurt for awhile but thought he looked healthy towards the end of the year
He played hurt the entire year. He gutted it out. If he is 100% healthy next year, look out!
That would explain a lot of what I was looking at. I didn't think he played like he was healthy. I mean, yeah, one is going to play hurt as the year goes on. But this looked like something wasn't right.
The odd thing is I think Domask played some of his best ball the last 2-3 weeks of the season.
But it would be great to know things like what the deal is with his surgery, if Ben Harvey is planning to be back, any scheduling news (many teams have been linked to MTEs for next year), etc. The coverage in the SI has sunk to new depths, but hopefully Reis will do an interview with Mullins to hit on some of this stuff in the near future.
It’s funny you mentioned this, I actually wrote to the editor of The Southern expressing my sadness in how coverage of SIU sports in general has waned. Almost every other MVC school has a beat writer who writes stories on recruiting, spring football, the MVC at large, etc. Say what you want about Todd and him not having the connections within the program, but he would have covered a lot more than what we have right now. I don’t put this all on Bucky Dent either…they are asking him to do a lot with coverage of SIU and high school sports. I wish we could get someone like Wyatt Wheeler in Springfield or Todd Golden in Terre Haute or Paul Oren in Valparaiso. Paul Oren even left the paper to start a subscription based newsletter that focuses on all things Valpo athletics. I wish someone would start something like that for SIU…I have no problem paying for coverage of the teams I want to follow. Hopefully more on here would do the same. I still subscribe to The Southern, but if we got something like The Victory Bell newsletter going here I would be happy to support them too.
It was such a miss that they didn't pursue a hungry, recent grad-type for the SIU beat. You wouldn't even have to pay that much to get someone with some talent and some drive.
But that aside, the lack of news judgment currently is pretty staggering. Love how we get 37 tweets about a midweek baseball game against some OVC team and zilch about the best player on the basketball team having announced he had surgery.

I don’t disagree, but The Southern could be a bit hamstrung as well. When local papers get bought out by big media conglomerates like Lee Enterprises, staffing becomes a big issue…they like to run papers on bare bones funding, so even if they wanted to hire another reporter, it doesn’t mean they are able to do so. I’m not saying this is the issue, but I wouldn’t doubt it.
Sad state of affairs for local journalism.
Some of these problems I would think be on athletic department in general what happened to the days of the sports information director and press releases

That’s not a substitute for a beat writer who isn’t beholden to the athletic department.
@siu_2011 I was just referring to the lack of any information let alone what a beat writer would come up with

It doesn’t help that the Athletic department hasn’t had a true Marketing Director since Marissa Poppe left in 2020.

Must have some commitments in the pipeline. Interesting he is leaving at this point.
Between Verplancken and Coupet, you've lost 17.6 points per game in scoring and only added 7.7 points per game in Xavier Johnson. And this was a team that struggled to score at times last year. Johnson should make everyone better and Wonders should help with scoring but I don't have high hopes for next year unless there's 1 or 2 good scorers brought in right now.
I'm hopeful something is up in the portal that sparked this move but everything has gone quiet.

Just a guess, but this might also be a sign that Wonders is outplaying him in practice. He might have been thinking Wonders would be taking some of his minutes. Also, he wasn't going to be starting with the signing of Johnson, which will move Jones to the 2.
Good luck to Steven. He was a good player, student and teammate. Seemed like a very nice kid, too.
My best guess is that we probably has a commitment from a guard and hence his sudden departure.

Sure hope that is the case....

Wonder what's happening with Brian Moore. He got an offer from Chattanooga earlier today but still hasn't committed yet. We were in heavy on him all year, wonder if he's more attainable now.
Sorry to see Steven leave, but best of wishes to him.
