Between Verplancken and Coupet, you've lost 17.6 points per game in scoring and only added 7.7 points per game in Xavier Johnson.  And this was a team that struggled to score at times last year.  Johnson should make everyone better and Wonders should help with scoring but I don't have high hopes for next year unless there's 1 or 2 good scorers brought in right now.

I'm hopeful something is up in the portal that sparked this move but everything has gone quiet.

Just a guess, but this might also be a sign that Wonders is outplaying him in practice. He might have been thinking Wonders would be taking some of his minutes. Also, he wasn't going to be starting with the signing of Johnson, which will move Jones to the 2.

Good luck to Steven. He was a good player, student and teammate. Seemed like a very nice kid, too.

There is a lot of truth to this post.

Again, not worried. The sky isn’t falling and is most likely improving. Lots of time and good players left in the portal.

If we want to be program everyone here expects, adding competition with our role players is a must. Sadly, sometimes that means guys lose their roles. But it’s what needs to happen to yield a better squad.

Looks like according to EvanMiya we have already improved for next year, even without any more additions.

My best guess is that we probably has a commitment from a guard and hence his sudden departure.

Not sure how much Dembele counts because he didn't play last year.  Also doesn't include the loss of Coupet who was our 2nd best offensive player last year (tied with Jones) by OBPR (11.2 OBPR, 0.2 DBPR, 11.4 BPR).

If you check the old posts, I was excited about Wonders prior to last season.  I now have much more grounded  expectations after he wasn't ready to play.  I believe that at least one of the two players that the staff will be bringing in will be relied on to score more than Wonders.  In fact, I think it is critical if they want a legitimate shot at the conference crown.

Check back with me after the 2 expected signings but for now I am growing excited at the thought that the staff understands how important THIS upcoming season is in the program's growth and that they will go after players that will help take us to the next level.

Verplancken seemed like another really solid kid with a great work ethic and no drama. Good luck to him.

Basketball-wise, assuming Jones is going to play more at the 2 this year and you want to give Wonders a good look, you certainly didn't need Brown, Verplancken AND Harvey. That was a logjam of too many role player shooting guards with modest scoring/athleticism traits.

Now it's just a matter of how these open scholarships are used to get a feel for what the team's upside can be next year.

Will Verplanken have to sit a year?  This is his second transfer.

No, he transferred from D2 the 1st time. I think it's within D1 where the transfer rules for sitting a year with the 2nd transfer apply.

Mullins tweeted congrats to graduates in the program and mentioned Harvey among them, FWIW. Makes sense considering he’s been in college four years now.

Still pretty wild how little coverage/reporting there’s been about off-season developments in the program.

I still think there is a decent chance that he is done playing basketball and we just haven't been told yet. Our local media coverage is pathetic. Noone is there to ask any questions.

The Southern is now owned by a big outfit and the paper is now printed in St. Lou. Also, IMO siusalukis.com is not as thorough as they used to be, other than covering individual games.
