No surprise there.

Nope, not in the least. He seemed like a good kid, though, and was pretty positive on the bench even with his lack of PT. Hope he lands in a good spot.

Hopefully he’s the only one.

There will be at least 1 more.

Hopefully not a significant contributor.

My best guess would be Dembele.

I have to wonder what the issue with Butler was. He played less than a mediocre grad transfer and similar minutes to a true freshman walk on.

Maybe as a D first guard his game just didn't translate well to the Valley.

I'm hopeful there are 2 more, granted they are the 2 I'm thinking of and not a contributor.

It's weird because Butler was recruited by some decent programs.  It's possible he never developed as well as he should have playing on such a dominant high school team.  Maybe he goes JUCO or D2 and develops and gets back to D1 basketball.

We are recruiting hard for a PG and athletic wing that can play the 3 or 4. We only have 1 ride available with the Butler departure. We have to have 1 more player leave to open a 2nd scholarship for what we are targeting. It has to be someone besides D'Avanzo or Long as they can return and it won't count against the 13 schollies. All signs point to at least one more departure.

This team will almost assuredly NOT be a Thursday team next season due to addition by subtraction within the Valley.  But to really compete with the best teams, SIU needs significant upgrades in a couple areas.  For that to happen, someone needs to leave outside of Butler.

"I took it as a learning experience," Butler said. "I appreciate all the coaches for just giving me the opportunity to get better on and off the court."

SIU men's basketball coach Bryan Mullins was still finishing up season-ending interviews with his players this weekend. Players can enter the transfer portal with or without coaches' permission. Butler was the only Saluki in the portal as of Sunday night, according to verbalcommits.com.

I can't remember ever hoping or wishing that players would leave or indicate that 2 had to leave for us to get better.  Not going to start now either.
