Eric Butler has entered the transfer portal

No surprise there.
Nope, not in the least. He seemed like a good kid, though, and was pretty positive on the bench even with his lack of PT. Hope he lands in a good spot.
It’s a given that he is a good kid, “first you build the culture”, hope things work out well for him.

At “our” level, you are frequently one player away from “also ran” and “difference maker”. So let’s throw in Roland Roberts for us and Cameron Krutwig for Loyola. Period. Big men matter, haha.

I can't remember ever hoping or wishing that players would leave or indicate that 2 had to leave for us to get better. Not going to start now either.
I agree on the surface my comment(s) may seem cold. But I sincerely am looking at it from a dual benefit perspective. Butler was simply not going to get meaningful minutes here. By entering the portal, he can go to a school where he will get playing time grow more quickly as a player. I wish him nothing but the best.
Making it clear that I have no ill will towards any of the players, I will not apologize for wanting to win and win "now". SIU is under .500 in the last 2 seasons. While there are many circumstances that can explain this, I want more.....I expect more. Some fans are happy just having the feel good story of Mullins being our coach. Some fans don't mind waiting 4-5 seasons for a rebuild. I'm not one of those fans. I 1,000% support Mullins and I can count on one hand the amount of coaches I'd rather have here than him. But if this team is to REALLY take the next step, I feel they need significant upgrades in several areas. And counting on freshmen or other players who have never played at the D1 level is risky at best.
So while you and others might prefer to have Butler and some of the other players who didn't contribute this season, I remain hopeful that they are able to improve their personal situations (increased playing time) and SIU can bring in some much needed experience via the transfer portal.
@insaluki honestly we all want to win but the attitude form this and previous comments are literally the worst representation of Saluki fans. I don’t care if you don’t accept that rebuilds take time. Players and families see this board and attitude and comments like those make us all look like assholes.

I intentionally do NOT mention names until they have announced they have left. If you don't like what I write, please feel free to move on. I personally think YOUR comment is very a$$hole like so it goes both ways.

Idk what’s worse your treatment and attitude towards kids who play for us. Your attitude that you know better than the coaching staff. Or your inability to judge talent where every person is slow and unathletic to you.

I have no desire to mediate this Monday Night Raw tussle, but Dunkle, if you can’t see that Southern needs to get more athletic to challenge in the MVC, let alone win games in the postseason, I don’t know what to tell ya.
oh I know we do. We just can’t post that we hope people leave. We also have athletic guys coming. He admitted that he’s just mad because he wants to win now and thinks he’s knows more than the coaching staff. I’m sorry if I and others trust the coaching staff. It’s not even about being athletic though it’s being a bad fan and a poor representation of Siu

I'm the guy who speaks his mind. I'm the guy who doesn't think everyone should get an award for participation. I'm the guy who is probably over passionate about the Salukis and basketball in particular. I am sorry if I upset you. I am not sorry for how I feel. This is my last comment to you on this subject.
As Saluki fans we are passionate I have personally rooted for them for 50 years I have seen the good and the bad the last few years have been frustrating we are close to turning it around I personally have no time to waste on message boards that are making suggestions of what should happen to make us better I trust the coaches and their vision on who and what they need to compete in the valley and I believe that since most of us haven't talked to Coach Mullins should would try to tell him our opinions on what he needs or who he needs to be successful and one final thought current players future players and their families most likely read these so let's be positive for now and the future to help build the culture that is needed

I respect the sentiment and 50 years of fandom. I would only add that any fan board without suggestions, ideas, opinions, etc., is a boring message board that will soon be a wasteland. I think there’s a way to present opinions without being insulting to players or coaches, and in almost all cases, that’s what we have here.
@siudawgs let's us be positive not negative and hoping for players to leave to open scholarships as was mentioned earlier if the player leaves on his own wish him luck as people mentioned earlier about Eric Butler but let us refrain from hoping people leave to upgrade everyone offered a opportunity was given with a purpose let the staff handle the team and how they move forward

I agree that it’s not good form to publicly call out players you’d like to see move on. I don’t do that and I haven’t seen much of that here.
Respectfully, I don’t look at things through a “positive” vs. “negative” prism. There is gray area and nuance in sports, and plenty of room for respectful debate and ideas for how to achieve the success we all want.

I absolutely trust the coaching staff. That being said, I believe they are very much of the same mind set as the people you are berating on here. They realize the team needs to get longer and more athletic. I'm sure they sat down with Eric Butler & his family and explained that he may get more playing time elsewhere. I'd guess there are a couple others in the same situation and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who they are. That may seem harsh, but it's reality. The staff wants to win now just as much (probably more) as we do.
I do agree with you that it's probably not the classiest idea to call them out by name. But we are dumbass fans on a fan board and we do what we do (until barkeep tells us not to)! The transfer thing is a touchy issue and I have faith our staff with handle it with the class and delicacy it deserves with the ultimate goal of improving the team.
