Also, one of our better defensive games as a team. We struggled offensively and dribbled way too much, but Loyola extends their defense well and is a very smart, veteran team. We are very young and hopefully the offense will run better with time, less injuries and additional talent. Remember, teams like Loyola and Drake average about 21-22 years of age and we average about 19.5.
The +- stat:
Dembele 4
DAvanzo, Jones 0
Filewich -2
Verplancken, Brown -5
Harvey -14
Banks -18
Not sure how Verplancken is -5 with 17 pts, 8 rbs. I suspect that's a typo and should be +5.
Between Jones and Banks, it was a really rough night for the point guards. At least a rough 35 minutes.
They need to be better tomorrow or it’ll get ugly because Loyola will shoot it better.
@siu_2011 he’s our best option at that position. Idk you tell anyone why he’s still in.
The way he played today, I would have rather seen D’Avanzo at the 5 down the stretch. Agree overall he’s our best 5 man, but that doesn’t mean you can’t adjust when he’s having an off night.
@siu_2011 in this kind of season game playing experience is better for our future
Games like this make you wonder if Jones is better suited at the 2 guard than the point guard. Maybe more experience will help but his shooting and decision making seem better for the 2 guard.
Well - other than Filewich going 2-10 - that wasn't as rough as I thought it would be.

It’s a legit question. I could see Banks at the point and Jones more off the ball next year, but we shall see. Still think Brown off the bench would be for the best.

Seems like the staff has recruited guys that can play the point guard next season so maybe they're seeing the same thing, if anyone knows point guards it's Bryan Mullins. Jones is obviously a talented player but can't have as many turnovers as he has every game. Plus his outside shot has improved a ton.
It's just the fourth time in SIU history that they were scoreless at the FT line. But after watching the game, it wasn't like they were getting robbed with no-calls after drives. Loyola played outstanding with their defense in the paint and avoided picking up those fouls, period.
The Salukis really need to start the offense quicker tomorrow, though. Maybe part of the game plan was to reduce the total number of offensive possessions and grind this thing out, but when you're forced to haul up shots just to beat the shot clock all game long, it's not a recipe for success against the Ramblers... unless you go crazy from the arc AND keep the turnovers down. Cut those TOs in half and this could have been a LOT different.

We made him a point guard out of necessity last year as a freshman. He was a 2 guard in HS. However, with Banks at PG and Jones at 2 guard we are awful small at guard, so you really have to pick your spots when going with that combo.
Next year's Freshman Class:
Scotty Ebube 6'10" C
Kyler Filewich 6'9" C
Troy D'Amico 6'7" F
Foster Wonders 6'5" 2G
Dalton Banks 6'1" PG
Eric Butler 6'1" PG (if he's still here)
Next Year's Sophomore Class:
Marcus Domask 6'6" F
Lance Jones 6'1" PG
Ben Harvey 6'4" 2G
Trent Brown 6'1" 2G
Steven Verplancken 6'4" 2G
Just thought I'd give us something to smile about. Yeah, this year is rough. Next year will be better. We are building a program here.

Definitely not talking about making the change this year, although I think Banks was playing the point a lot in the 2nd half so maybe they're making it. But if there's a grad transfer PG out there that can start, it could be an interesting decision.

True, but no smaller than Brown at the 2.
Looking forward to seeing what pieces might be added this spring to provide more length and athleticism to the roster.

He really regressed on taking care of the ball tonight. Has been good in that most games this year. He was still one of our most valuable players tonight, kept us in it 1st half, made a few excellent passes. And a couple of those TOs were just good D by Williamson. Loyola is an excellent defensive team.
He had 5 TOs in 40 minutes against Valpo and played great, 21 pts, 4 assists.
Also had a very good game in the ISU win. With Jones, seems you have to take the good with the bad.
