For those asking, Ben Coupet's minutes were limited because he had not played basketball for 3 weeks due to hamstring injury.  It was assumed his minutes would be limited and that he wouldn't be at full strength.

From Team Rankings:

Southern Illinois Basketball

Predictions Update

Nov 10, 2021

After losing to AR Lit Rock 69-66 yesterday, Southern Illinois is now projected to finish the regular season 15-14 (9-9 MVC).

The odds that the Salukis make the NCAA tournament are down to 3%, a decrease of 2% since yesterday.

We currently rank Southern Illinois as the #155 team in the country, and the #5 team in the MVC.

Next game: Fri, Nov 12 vs. #302 Austin Peay. Our power ratings give the Salukis a 85% chance to win.

Can we all stepback off of the ledge it is one game to early to judge this team already having injuries making it hard to get a feel for rotations players having an off night things that can be fixed and a terrible atmosphere to play in let's make an informed decision after 10 games this team wasn't going to get an at large bid so let's use the pre season to build for the conference season

Amen. This board can be so bipolar. I wonder how Mo. State fans feel after losing at home to SEMO? I wonder how No. Iowa fans feel after losing at home to Nicholls? I believe this is the same Byran Mullins who coached SIU to a 5th place finish, with a very thin roster, after being picked to finish last in his first year. That which does not kill you makes you stronger. Buck up.

I went over to the Missouri State board and there’s a bunch of “Fire Dana Ford” chatter and then went over to the UNI board and people are frustrated with Jacobson.

For SIU, this was a 9th place team last year expected to make a big jump.  Losing to a bottom tier Sun Belt team doesn’t instill great confidence going forward.

Disappointing game.  We let the pressure defense and their length to get in our heads and we fell apart.  I was glad to see us make a game of it at the end, but they have to work on breaking the press.  I am looking forward to getting our mojo back on Friday.

I think they’ll look fine on Friday.  The question is how do they look in the MTE coming up.  Because if they play like they did yesterday, they’re gonna come home 1-4 overall

I know we are a man on man defensive team, which I prefer, but last night would have been a good opportunity to throw in some zone. Little Rock couldn't shoot from the outside and we knew that going in. I think if we had thrown in some zone D we could have limited their 18 point run. Turnovers were the biggest problem, but I think we should have mixed up the defenses. We never play zone!!!

No free pass on this game, bad loss. Little Rock was missing some key players and we still couldn't beat them. They had a great game plan and are well coached. We can't let any more inferior teams beat us. It will be interesting to see how Little Rock does the rest of the year. They have some nice players and can give teams fits with their length and good defense.

Reis said attendance was about 200 people on air.

So this was barely even a road game, almost a neutral court atmosphere.

They never released an official attendance…so yeah.  And this is a program that beat Purdue in the Tournament with Chris Beard just 5 years ago.

Yeah I went to the school site to look at the box score and saw nothing.

is that what lower programs do because to release the attendance is too embarrassing?

Little Rock’s aggressive defense might give teams trouble going forward but they didn’t impress me too much.  Nothing against them but SIU gave this game away and should have won by a decent margin.  Maybe Little Rock is better than their #293 KenPom rank but I think we’ll look back on this as a pretty bad loss.

Maybe this is the wake-up call SIU needed or a sign of things to come.  How last season ended and how this season started is a huge red flag to me though.

Glad hoops are back, but this team is not ready for prime time. First game, I know but another really poor performance overall, first 10 minutes aside. LOTS of work to do. Still not worried.

Well, you should be.  We have nothing.  No point guard.  No shooters.  No inside presence.  No ball handlers.  No passers.  No defenders.  No coaching.  No discipline.  No confidence.  We played like a scared grade school team tonight.

Well I'm not. Was it ugly? Absolutely! Am I disappointed? Definitely!

Not a Kool-aide drinker by any means either. First game on the road, after a weird ass Covid season, with a few guys still hobbling. Not how you start, but how you finish (maybe I am overly optimistic).

What does bother me along with the turnovers, poor passing, out of control play etc. is Mullin's extra pass mantra. Looks to me like they have coached wide open shots OUT of their offense. With respect to Harvey for example, it appears he is afraid to shoot a wide open shot because he MUST pass again. And how in the hell do you have a shot clock violation there at the end coming out of a timeout for Chrissakes?

Again, lots of work to be done including coaching.

Yeah, you sound SUPER optimistic!  🤣   I agree with everything you just said.

For those asking, Ben Coupet's minutes were limited because he had not played basketball for 3 weeks due to hamstring injury.  It was assumed his minutes would be limited and that he wouldn't be at full strength.

Minutes limitation is what was going through my mind, although he sat for a very long time in the second half when we really could've used him. If he had a 20 minute cap, the distribution was very poor. He did have a very bad turnover, which led to a dunk while UALR was making their run, but so what? The entire team was an apple turnover.

Coupet is a clear starter, and very well may be that 3rd reliable scoring option this team needs. You can see with his triple-threat ability, athleticism and length why he was a very highly regarded prospect once upon a time.

Absolutely agree and he also passes the eye test.

Nicholls was 18 - 7 and won the Sun Belt last year. Better team than UALR. They missed a bunch of FTs at the end or they might have won at UNI by 10.

If by January or February we can play like we did the 1st 10 minutes, nobody will want to play us!

And UALR plays good D, so give them some credit. After Jones and Domask and Coupet, we didn't show much. MVC teams are gonna focus on LJ and MD - we are going to need other weapons to beat decent teams.
