We can’t win if we can’t hit 3s. That’s the only advantage we have against MoSt and they just aren’t dropping.
In this game we had many, many close-in, high % shots, especially with Prim sitting out a lot.
That's good to see, because depending on the three is a good way to lose a lot. Unfortunately, we missed at least a dozen close-in shots. Jones, Davanzo, Harvey, Banks, Filewich all missed very makeable shots. We make 7 of those and we win this game.
That was just an ugly basketball game..on both sides..from start to finish. They happen sometimes...just need to learn and move on..

And if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.
We just aren't a very good team right now without Domask. Contrary to what some have said, I didn't think we were very competitive the second half and I'm not going looking for moral victories in a 12-point loss. We aren't going to get any better until our new crop of players arrives or at least until our extremely young team gets more experience. Programs aren't built overnight and we can trust that Mullins & staff are moving in the right direction. Until then, no need to sugar coat things. I promise next year (and beyond) will be better! 😉

We had a couple of nice games - Butler, Murray - with Domask, games where we shot the lights out. Not sure we were ever a very good team.
They shot 61% plus 4 - 8 from 3 in the 2nd half. That's how the game got out of hand. We were definitely more competitive 1st half.
We need to work on those bunnies and some contested layup drills. I'm pointing out we had many, many shots around the basket and just couldn't make them. More than usual.
If you live and die by the three pointer, you're going to die a lot unless you're Klay Thompson and Steph Curry. We need that inside game.
I'm hoping Domask isn't rushed back into playing. Season is mostly for experience and learning. Rather see him heal up for good!
Jones' outside game has improved so much from the beginning of last season (he's currently 134th in the country in 3 point shooting) improving on his 30% from 3 last season. But I'm not sure what happened to his inside game. He was 8th in the MVC last year on 2 point FG % (56.1%) but this year he's 33.7% from 2 overall and 31.8% in Missouri Valley Conference games.
These are some of the KenPom numbers to compare Jones from this year to last year:

As frustrating as that was last night, we lost by 12 to a pretty good team. Granted, both teams did not look good, especially in the first half. If Domask returns, I think we have a legitimate shot to beat them next week at home. Of course, we need Trent Brown to keep playing excellent defense on Mosley for that to happen, but it could with a good day.

I agree Brown did a really nice job playing defense on Mosely, but Trent also scored two points in 39 minutes of play, so Southern was still -10 in that matchup, if you want to look at it simplistically.
Brown has improved quite a bit this year but if he's playing 30+ minutes a night, that's probably not a great sign for the current depth in the program. Not picking on Trent at all ... no one played particularly well yesterday and he plays the right way, and obviously the coaches really like him, but his offense has slid back to being pretty spotty in league play.
I would really like to see Trent look to score more on drives, he does make good moves toward the basket when the floor is open but always looks to pass out of that as he goes through instead of making a shot attempt, even reverse layup type, as he is doing it. The couple of times that he has he has scored and I think he could draw a lot of fouls and with his FT ability could convert. He is a little quicker with first step than I think opponents guarding him realize and they don't really anticipate him making moves to the basket.

Ya the 1st half was hard to watch at times.

Looking at conference stats, we are ranked 8-10 in a lot of categories. Most notably:
Last in scoring
8th in defense scoring
9th in defense FG %, last in defense 3 pt FG %
9th in FT %
9th in rebounding margin
Obviously this reflects our record, but it's disappointing to see our FTs and defensive numbers be awful.
I'm fully on board with the direction of the program. I just don't care for the excuses or "moral victory" arguments. I seriously doubt Bryan Mullins or any member of the team would consider losing by 12 to a conference opponent a "moral victory."
When we're relying on 3-pointers we need to make 'em or have rebounding ready...and we're not good rebounders.

Is it just me or does Jones have a bit of Steve Middleton potential?
I hope not. Scoring 40 is great. Scoring 40 on 78 shots is not
I meant Middleton in a good way. Not the 9,354,621 shots a game side of him. 😉
