The Salukis resume conference season for their first MVC game against Murray State.

Murray State has one quality win over #73 Texas A&M (who was ranked at the time) and one bad loss to #261 Bellarmine.

Murray State is 359th of 363 D1 teams in bench minutes used (18.8%) and 344th in the country in minutes continuity from last season (13.0%).

What the Racers do well:
On the offensive end, Murray State has done a good job at getting to the free throw line.  The Racers are 76th in the country in free throw attempts per field goal attempts (35.2).  They've also avoided turnovers on the offensive end as they're 111th in the country in turnover % on the offensive end (17.8%) and 105th in the country in steal % on the offensive end (8.6%).

On the defensive end, the Racers have guarded the 3 well.  Murray State is 39th in the country in 3 point % against (29.0%).  They're also 102nd in the country in effective field goal % against (47.8%).

What the Racers don't do well:
Murray State has really struggled at shooting the 3.  The Racers are 331st in the country in 3 point % (29.3%).

On the defensive side, the Racers have struggled at creating turnovers.  Murray State is 322nd in the country in turnover % on the defensive end (16.0%) and 329th in the country in steal % (7.1%).

The Racers leading scorer is 6'4 Junior Rob Perry averaging 15.2 points per game.  Perry came over to Murray State after three seasons at Stetson where he scored over 1,000 points and was named Atlantic Sun Freshman Player of the Year after averaging 15 points per game his Freshman season.  This season, Perry is 35th in the country in % of total minutes played (88.9%) and is 142nd in the country in turnover rate (9.9%) and 272nd in the country in free throw % (22-27, 81.5%).

Murray State's leading rebounder is 6'7 Junior DJ Burns averaging 8.1 rebounds per game.  Burns is one of the few hold-overs from last season's Racer team and he came over last season after two seasons at Southern University.  Burns started all 34 games at Murray State last year.  This season, Burns is 369th in the country in 2 point % (36-62, 58.1%), 206th in the country in effective field goal % (58.1%), and 218th in the country in true shooting % (60.8%).  Burns is also 65th in the country in offensive rebounding % (13.6%) and 109th in the country in free throw rate (54.8).

The Racers leader in assists and steals is 6'2 Junior JaCobi Wood averaging 4.8 assists per game and 1.6 steals per game. Wood came over to Murray State after 2 years at Belmont and he's a guy that Murray State literally can't get off the floor as Wood is 10th in the country in % of minutes played (92.0%).  Wood has done a good job at getting to the free throw line and knocking down his free throws as he's 93rd in the country in free throw rate (56.2) and 102nd in the country in free throw % (47-54, 87.0%).  Wood is 234th in the country in assist rate (24.4%) and 495th in the country in true shooting % (55.9%).

Other players of note on this Murray State team include 6'8 Senior Jamari Smith.  Smith is a transfer from D2 (now D1) Queens University and leads the Racers in both shots and possessions.  Smith is 132nd in the country in % of shots taken when on the floor (29.1%) and 171st in the country in % of possessions gone through him when on the floor (27.0%).  Smith is also 414th in the country in fouls drawn per 40 minutes (4.5).  6'7 Junior Kenny White is a transfer from Tennessee Tech and is the team leader in blocks with 1.2 blocks per game and is 293rd in the country in block % (3.8%).

Under “what they do well” one may include getting technical fouls for intentional elbows to the faces of players, Perry vs Bellarmine, having to be physically restrained by ref when going after opposing player, Burns vs Chi State, and slamming ball to the floor for displeasure at call vs Middle TN. Go Dawgs.

Add to the above the fact that this has always been an intense rivalry with some bad blood between these two teams and we have the perfect storm for a very physical contest. Let's hope that the Mullins mantra "first you establish the culture" means that our players will be the ones showing the most restraint. Going into to Murray will be a test in itself. Our fans travel well, so there should be a bit of Maroon there to cheer on the Dawgs.

There is no doubt that this will be a difficult ballgame both physically and mentally. My hope/belief is that our players contain composure throughout the contest, most notably the last five minutes, if in a close contest. My fear is one of their players purposely trying to injure one of our better players. Scottie being back would certainly add another physical presence.

GO DAWGS!

If any of you guys get in a fight at Murray, ReSaluki and I will be right there to back you up (about 30 feet behind you).

Correction, Rockin will be 30' behind you and I will be 30' behind him. However, we'll have your back...

KenPom has Murray State winning 66-65.  If SIU plays like they have 3 of the last 4 games, guessing Murray State wins.  They're not an amazing team though.  Hopefully Ebube is good to go.

If the Salukis don't get the turnover deficiency cleaned up quickly, we're in a heap a trouble. Hoping they outrun the Racers, but more likely will be a grind out, last possession or two struggle.

Merry Christmas Saluki Insiders!

March on triumphantly!

I've watched multiple Murray St games and in EACH one there was at least some kind of "issue".  If anyone is to retaliate on SIU, my bet would be on Rupert.  Here's hoping he keeps his cool and that SIU sneaks out a victory there.  While Murray has certainly had it's ups and downs this season, a rivalry game typically brings out the best in an opponent.  At this point, I really would not be surprised if the Salukis won by double digits, lost by double digits, won a close game or lost a close game.  Mama said, the Salukis are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

I don't know why people seem suprised by The Racers antics they acted the same way when Prohm coached them before like I said previously he is an ahole and coaches this way hopefully Bmull has the Dawgs prepared for this situation and they walk away with a win

This sums up my expectations for Thursday night.

Murray looked pretty good the first few weeks (especially in their MTE) and has mostly played poorly more recently. That said, I'm sure they'll be amped for a home game with SIU, so, as others have said, this one is pretty difficult to predict.

Would be really nice to get this one with additional challenging games on the docket for early-to-mid-January, not to mention to set the right tone for this growing rivalry ...
