There is no bigger backer of Bryan Mullins than me. But he needs to get better as well as his team. We need to play faster and work for good shots sooner. We need to eliminate the touches that the post players have at the arc as they serve only to use up our shot clock. This slow pace is not going to help recruiting either. Would Jamal Tatum or Kent Williams signed on to play this tempo and style?
SIU still has some big strides to take before they become relevant again. The offense seriously struggles and would have expected more of a Floorburn U mentality on defense. Defenders play off of the guys they're guarding and don't always seem to be athletic enough to stay in front of their man.
I think people mistake my criticism of Muila as an endorsement of Filewich.
Neither should be starting for a D1 basketball team. The difference is some here really overrate Muila.
“It was just one of those games offensively “ - Mullins to Reis just now.
I have no words. That was the final comment. Lordy.
better than "thanks to our fans, thanks to our listeners" after you get drubbed.
I think Bryan should lap the floor and clap at each fan section, even at away games!
And buy pizzas for the student section.
And wear a suit and a tie like Rich Herrin, Bruce Weber, Matt Painter, Chris Lowrey and Barruh!
I personally think Domask's struggles are in part to him having to be such a big part of the offense which is making him press along with teams being able to zero in on him. He is also more suited to the 3 than the 4. This isn't helped by Jones being injured. Not having Brown who can stretch defenses also is not great. SIUs biggest issue is the 5 though. Muila and Filewich would be decent enough as backups but neither should be starters. It's such a weak position for SIU right now. I am not talking crap so don't ban me for that observation.

Tatum did play this tempo and style. This is exactly how we played back then too, slow and methodical.

Exactly. Come on!

Our best player was 0-fer a freaking million. 'Nuff said.

Players have off nights it happens at every level it is terrible timing against a quality opponent hell even Tom Brady got shutout all Marcus can do is learn and move on and as bad as we feel I am sure he feels worse
Rodney Watson is good on the color commentary, but as such, I'd rather have him on the Saluki bench. I bet there is no one over 45 years old on this staff.
I don't intend to toot my own horn here, but I knew that some poster's love for acclaiming a 35 year old assistant was the majority reason for Loyola's success was misguided. I still think it will turn out to be a good coaching hire - and it's one that SIU would have been stupid to not take a flyer on, considering the alumni connection and that SIU is cash-strapped - I guess I'm just venting that we're still having so mental lapses and breakdowns. We play a lot of sloppy basketball.
Yes, while I've not previously commented on this, I've always wondered why so many gave ALL credit for Loyola's success, includeing the last 3 years to Mullins. Meanwhile, Oklahoma has just beat 2 ranked teams with Moser and without Mullins. Hmmmmmm
Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, I was unable to watch the game. That being said, I'm somewhat surprised at how upset the board was. While I totally get the frustration, SIU lost to a better team. It seems the board is bi-polar....getting all fired up after beating a D2 team and then ready to burn the place down when they lose to a superior team.
Without the eye test, I'm not sure how accurate this is, but by looking at the numbers, it seems that had Domask played his normal game and Lance was 100% healthy (and able to cut, drive, etc) SIU actually had a shot in this game, on the road against a really good team.
I feel like the story that will ultimately be written about this team for the year will be what they do in Valley play. If they surprise me and finish in the top 3, I think we can forget about some of the early season negative results. If they surprise me and finish in the bottom half, then we have some serious concerns going forward.
So the non-conference schedule is pretty much over now, one more non-DI game notwithstanding. The Colorado win is pretty much the lone good W on the ledger, and counterbalanced by dropping the other two at the Paradise Jam (including the frustrating ending against Creighton), losing winnable road games at Little Rock and Tulsa, and not putting a scare into San Francisco. Overall, pretty underwhelming considering this is a fairly experienced team. I know Bryan Mullins and his staff are very competitive, so I'd like to think they were expecting more from this year's team to this point as well.
Considering so-so point guard play has been one of the team's lingering shortcomings, it's been frustrating to see some of the JUCO guards Southern was recruiting last spring play really well elsewhere. Terry Roberts has been on a big roll for Bradley lately and Tylor Perry leads North Texas in scoring. I think there is enough talent and competitive spirit on this team to play better than they have in Jan-Feb-March, but some of the holes that have been discussed seemingly will need to be addressed through recruiting this offseason (as well as hoping the two redshirts are helpful additions next year).

I think every college team's board is a little bipolar lol
