Jerry Kill is a winner. Jerry Kill knows how to recruit people. What got better under Tommy Bell?
The fact that he wanted Hinsonto stay gives me a lot of pause in praising this hire. I hope it works out.
Like everyone else I've always liked Kill. However this seems more like a stab in the back to me. Kiss the chancellor's ass by agreeing that Hinson shouldn't be fired and then take over as the ad. This long time season ticket holder, alum, and retiree of SIU is done.
Hey sports fans. Last year on SalukiNation, several posters said that if bell allows hinson to coach another year (2018-2019), we should start a "fire tommy bell" thread.
bell blamed a booster for the original 2 year contract extension and then blamed the top campus administrator and his assistant for retaining hinson.
bell was paid in excess of $500,000.00 and never accepted responsibility for his decision(s) and/or told the truth behind the contract extension.
bell left the athletic department with record budget deficits, declining season ticket sales, declining revenue receipts and declining attendance.
Replacing bell is definitely the right move.
I know it makes a lot of people nervous and a lot of people aren't happy for various reasons, but what very few people want to acknowledge is that the MVC is currently a 1 bid league given the departure of top teams. So the only way to make the NCAA is to win the tourney. BH finished 4th then 3rd and now 2d. All the while doing exactly what he was hired to do. No arrests, graduation rates up, reduce transfers, raise GPA, etc... If we had just hired a coach to win, we wouldn't have been eligible for post season play anyway. If you were going to show him the door, the time for that was 2 or 3 years ago. Not when you have 20 wins and finish 2d with a bunch of players hurt. Now with Bell's letter out there he is probably done for. Won't be able to recruit. Gonna graduate a load of talent. So even if you win this year it will be tricky to maintain the momentum. Answer to what got better under Bell? Women's Soccer!
I only see this as a negative thing. I love Kill and everything he did for us back in the day, but this is not the same SIU. It has got much worse, financially, academically, and athletically. I know he will do what is best for the university, but I believe he is too good of friends with Barrybird to do the right thing for the sake of the basketball program. I don't care if Hucky has "improved" this team the last few seasons. It is a smoke screen of an improvement. I hope Jerry holds the Bell Ultimatum to Berruh and win or go. That Ultimatum may have likely been tossed into the firepit this afternoon.
This whole university smells of fiery turds right now...
I hope I'm wrong, but this does not sound like a good thing at all. They might as well made Hinson the athletic director. At least that way someone else is leading the basketball program.
For those suddenly looking at the entire athletic department, did Bell really have time to improve a financial situation that was completely messed up at the time he arrived? Did Alums offer enough assistance? How have Bell’s hires done?
Some cold hard facts are needed here.
Hefferman at his best
Hefferman just confirmed the old board and MSN was right.
Well there it is we are all good
“"I'm going to be the head coach at this institution next year, and I love my team, and I love this program," Hinson said. "I'm excited as I've ever been for the upcoming season. We just finished second to a team that went to the Final Four. I know that this program has turned the corner."
BBQ at his best. At least Heff did admit Cook saved BBQ’s ass

In case people still think Barkeep was Fake News, he wasn’t. Thanks for all the information.

Hinson was not hired to miss the postseason in his first 6 years. That’s all that needs to be said.
Kill is a Hinson bootlicker, regardless of what amazing good he did for football that clearly means Kill is not going to be a positive force for the future of this program. Basketball is dead, unless "alive" means finishing top half and accomplishing jackhalf beyond that
The whole cutting tennis, getting a Title 9 investigation and then having to add women's soccer saga was probably Bell's biggest mistake in the eyes of the general public. To a casual southern Illinois resident or fan, the men's basketball team and football team is good enough, but when people find out the feds are investigating and kids lost scholarships, that's where the general public starts getting uneasy. I know a lot of people are still confused about not just adding tennis back instead of adding women's soccer. Whether it was his fault or not, having all that go down on his watch didn't look good. Not to mention, it all went down while SIU didn't go to any major postseason tournaments in it's most high profile sports during his tenure. People have certainly been let go for much less in the highly competitive sports world.

I mean it comes down to revenue. Soccer will generate more revenue to the University than tennis.
