Here's a thought-

Anyone think Kill might be angling for the AD position?"

Called that one almost a month ago. Kill may not have been looking for the job, but he's got it now. I think MontyMango figured with an expiring contract this was his exit strategy for Bell all along.

If the mans contract was up and he's not coming back, then that is simply a non-renewal and not a firing.

That’s like being laid off while the company is still hiring. 😛

So the Southern says today that Kill is the Interim AD and a national search will begin in the future. When asked, Kill wasn't sure if he would apply for the permanent AD position.

As for Jerry Kill, the man himself, I don't think he'd involve himself in any capacity if he wasn't planning on giving it 110%. It's not in his DNA. I'm not worried about that at all. The potential problem I see is how much freedom will he actually have to do what he wants with the various programs? Has he been put in this position as just a beloved name in a desperate attempt to try and appease the increasingly disgruntled fan base?

Of course, this is all dependent on if Kill is even given the AD position long-term, or if he even wants it. I think there's a good possibility they bring in another muppet in the near future.

1. Barkeep 100% accurate and some knob tries to set people on fire because of it.

2. The more I sit here and read about Jerry Kill the more I want to puke.  People talking about integrity and being his own man but this whole think stinks more and more of a setup.  It doesn't take much of a leap to see that Carlo, Cookie and Kill conspired to put the job in Kill's hands from the beginning.  There is no honor in coming in the backdoor and driving the knife in to someone.  Could have done this with no stink by not bringing Kill in until you take care of Bell.  Regardless of Bell's performance (or lack of) this is a dirty deal.  Carlo should be ashamed and unemployed, and Cook obviously has no shame.

3. PT isn't smart enough to shut his mouth and is out there strutting around like he won something.  Heff should be shown the door for blind editorializing in his piece.  Just another hack in a long line of hacks covering athletics for the Illusion.

4. Who is going to be holding this big burning bag of doo doo when the basketball team exits stage left in the semifinals at Scottrade next year.  You've further driven a big spike between a whole lot of people and hope Kill can give the good old boy routine well enough to smooth over the pile. Enjoy mingling with the 800 fans in the Arena for those showdowns with Chicago State and Absorbine Junior College next season Jerry.  This is going to reverberate for years - long after Kill abandons us for the next big thing.  He comes here, spends a few days and is off to Kansas State.  Stays there a few days and is off to Rutgers.  Stays a few days and off to Carlo's Clown Car.  Oh, and have I mentioned that he sued SIU?

I'm done.  Carlo hiring family.  Cook treating the university like his personal toy.  Kill hiding in the weeds.  Maybe Cook can buy up all of those empty seats and replace all the funds that have been flying out of SASF.  This is wrong.

This ^

I have never been in the Jerry Kill fan club . Indeed he is a great football coach, no denying that. But my take on Jerry was and is that for the most part Jerry is about Jerry and not much else. This was a setup from the very beginning. Not renewing in this case is the same thing as firing, stop the semantics. Bell was fired because certain powers that be won the fight. Carlo set Bell up. Bell doesnt go ahead and raise money for buying out Hinson without permission from the top. Permission granted, Bell raises the money, the guy at the top goes along, BH goes to the guy at the top and begs for his job and Carlo relents. Tree limb chopped off behind Bell.

I dont think this was some kind of brilliant way to get rid of Bell. I think Carlo went along and then chickened out. I do think Bell was the fall guy . The plan was almost certainly to not renew once Jerry was on board, but no one will ever admit that. That was about as obvious as could be when it happened.

You can argue about Bell's effectiveness but he was hamstrung from the beginning by the previous administrations fiscal irresponsibility and by forces outside the University that were beyond his control that had enough power to keep BH here, not once but twice after he was given notice. Jerry may do a good job, but my guess is that he will be gone within two years, with nothing accomplished other than finally firing BH( and he'll take credit for what Bell tried to do twice) ...and thats still a question mark. Does anyone believe that if BH wins 20 and goes to the NIT that SIU will let him go? Wont happen. Ive been a season ticket holder since I was a student more than four decades ago. I will not renew this year for the first time since my freshman year. Until BH is gone I cant justify contributing to SASF or buying basketball season tickets. Thats it.

Tried to post a response and seemed to lose it so hopefully this is not a repeat folks. I agree university antics could run almost anyone off, but Coach Kill may be the one guy who is best situated to deal with the athletic system as a whole (boosters, influential donors, fans, administration, coaches, etc.). Jerry is about building trust and getting everyone pulling in the right direction. Lord knows the university could sure use some of that at this point. I for one am on board and excited about the possibilities for the first time in a long time. Irrespective of Barry's relationship with coach he will have to perform and improve and get results or he will not be there. Jerry is about winning.

I am going to clarify a bit. I don't think Hinson's antics would cause Kill to leave. I think Hinson's antics might, however, cause Kill to get the go ahead from Cook to fire Hinson. That leaves the problem as this - what if Cook still says no? I don't think Greg Cook anticipated his name being out there as much as it has been. Who knows, there's still the off chance that the public pressure could finally flip him to the point that he finally says "enough" of Hucky.

I certainly see the merit of having a former coach as athletic director over a businessman like the last three AD's were. That said, one of the businessmen (PK AD) was very successful. The other two, not so much. I do think that in a different situation that Bell would have got another year to be able to institute his plan. To be judged in a three-year time frame as an AD is harsh, IMO. Usually, I wait until 4-5 years down the road to make a correct judgment. This can certainly be argued as a non-normal situation. Tommy Bell barely got the chance to make his own hires. If you wanted to make the argument that the volleyball hire was bad, that's certainly valid. Kathleen Raske was a good hire. Nick Hill was certainly a good hire.

Otherwise, the department has a lot of carry over from Mario and that's interesting when Bell was brought in to create change after the departure of Mario to New Mexico State.

Fray in 4 or 5 years this once proud institution will be down to 10,000 students.  Until these fucking. idots running this shit hole can figure something out nothing is going to improve . SIU is an embarrassment .

Oberkfell, the University has been an embarrassment for a while. Do you think I’m not acutely aware of that? Don’t start me on academics because I think I’ve been as critical as anyone in that regard. SIU has to change or die, and yet a bunch of people in both the administration and faculty want to milk the corpse for all it’s worth while they are heading out the door. What we are now learning is that athletics is also run in the same haphazard and self-serving manner as academics. Only conclusion is to look at the top, look at Carlo the Clown, and the people on the board who hired him. Notice I said “people on the board” and not Dunn.

A couple of national story links (but nothing really new)...

The first comment under the story: I am so sick and tired of hearing about Jerry Kill. He's a has been followed by the Star Trib everywhere he's gone. Every time he goes somewhere he gets sick again and then quits. He'll quit at SIU after a few years because of his illness. Enough is enough. Does he pay the Tribune money to print his bio now that he's gone?

Agree, but Dunn is a snake in the grass as well. Total politician who has been after Carlo since the board wouldnt make another incestious hire so Dunn would still have the power. He needs to go as well.

The question bouncing around in my mind now is not what will happen at SIU if we win 20 and get an NIT bid or what if we win the MVC trny and get the automatic NCAA, but: What will all the posters say then?  Do we still call for a change?  Does the board suddenly go dark?  If Bol isn't hurt, you might well have seen that result this year.  No question the league is down.  No question our RPI and non conference were as well.  But what if we win in our puddle?  What then?

I am pretty numb. Part of me is happy, the other is sick. This is the modern day Soap opera that is SIU. I am almost there at pulling the plug on this university and administration. This Carlo guy is nothing but trouble. Jerry is no longer warm and fuzzy anymore. Sad, sad, sad turn of events and NON events that should have happened.  Disgusting!!!!
