Yeah, I don't get making excuses for Drake's success while excusing SIU's failure. Obviously, Drake and SIU's roster/coaching staff turnover have some differing variables, but come on ... they have an entirely new everything and they're 24-3 ... that's TWENTY FOUR wins and THREE losses!
In an alternate world, say SIU had hired McCollum and we had Drake's roster heading into the season; a mostly undersized and unproven roster at the D1 level. Realistically, would your expectations for 2024-25 have been markedly higher? Not mine.
I know Elliott going down was a huge loss. It personally took the wind out of my sails. Even still, SIU is 12-17 and will have a losing conference record AT HOME in an MVC that defined turnover in college basketball.
This has been a massive failure by any standard. Please stop making excuses.
Wait a second — how many of Drake’s starters came with McCollum from Northwest Missouri?
So I ask again, is the main reason for this the NIL money that other teams have and we do not ? Did this coach not know the state of affairs before he took the job ?

Why do you say SIU basketball doesn’t have competitive NIL? I have no inside info, but judging from statements of the AD, what I do know of SIU basketball’s donor base, and how Nagy recruited in a short time after being hired, I am guessing they’re actually towards the top of the Valley.
Football may be a different story.
coach is now 48-46 over the past three years of his career. Barry was 54-44 his final three. Bryan was 58-38.
in understand those that are loyal and all in, just as I understand those who aren't seeing rainbows on the horizon. beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
the bobber is certainly willing to call this year a forgettable, unmitigated mess and move on. as some have pointed out, there are "reasons."
next year? that better be a different story.
I was only speculating that the NIL $$$ are the main issue with the program. If that is not the case, maybe we can yet get to where we want to be.
However, that does shine more of a light on coaching and recruiting possibly being the issue.
