@atlantasaluki We probably played against each other in intramurals. I started at SIU in September of 1969.
Pardon the interruption, but I am tossing in a few roses among the muck. Congrats to Anthony D'Avanzo on a good game: 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists. Oh, wait, he came from a D2 program so there is no way he can be a meaningful contributor. My bad. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.
I don't recall anyone saying that, but nice try. What was actually said was that you probably can't build a title contender with D2 and low major transfers.
@class-of-69 Let me add to your great assessment. First, as tough as yesterday's game was, Southern played just about as good as they can play RIGHT NOW. Valpo was simply better (hats off to them). Second, we are not even two years into the Mullins tenure and all I read is it has already failed (give me a break). Coach is undertaking a complete rebuild of the program, not an overhaul of the previous regime. THIS WILL TAKE TIME AND PATIENCE. Third, we are one of the youngest teams in the NCAA that is playing without two key starters and a depleted bench (what is UNI's excuse?).
I have been around Saluki basketball for a very long time and I cannot honestly point to more than a handful of true FROSH of SOPH who were gamechangers as FROSH or SOPH for Southern. I like the core talent we have (Banks, Kyler, Marcus, Lance, Brown, Verplancken, and Harvey). Add JD and the three recruits, you have a pretty solid 11 with room to add a few more (the athletic transfers many point to).
Finally, of course this rebuild will be tougher when the MVC is getting better and better. Of course it won't easy UNLESS other teams decide to stink up the court in the near future. Everyone needs to keep an eye on the long game and not what happens tomorrow or next week in the STL (Go Southern Go) ! ! !
Really? That's all you ever read?? Name me ONE person who has called the Mullins Regime a "failed tenure." Geez, you two guys and your straw man arguments. 🙄
If I only had a brain. 😎
As awful as we have been in conference play, if Verplanken makes that shot in game 1 of this series, we have a decent shot of avoiding Thursday. That's pretty crazy to me. Oh well. This team has had plenty of other chances to get an extra win or two.
At the very least, with Domask we know we are a much better team. I do not expect SIU to be amongst the top teams in the MVC next year because the top will be very good, possibly even better, next year. With that said, there is no reason that we can't be AT LEAST a middle of the pack team next year I believe. I'd say its optimistic but reasonable to say that this team wins 8 to 10 conference games this year with Domask, and who knows if we had Muila.
After the blowout loss to Illinois State, I got really down on this team. It's not been pretty. But my hope is returning.
With the type of season SIU has had, I’m actually impressed posters have kept pretty level-headed. I don’t think I’ve seen one poster lose faith in the Mullins regime long term. It’s fine to be upset at how the season has gone and express worries about next year, and it’s also fine to be positive about where we think the program is headed. Regardless, we all bleed maroon!
