Interesting; they're handing out waivers like drunken sailors this year.
On one hand, I'm excited to see the kid play and think he is a talented player, but on the other hand, the redshirt year may have been nice, the backcourt is pretty crowded and he'll use a year of eligibility in what will be a weird/shortened season.
Now that he's apparently playing, I expect to see Southern play quite a bit of small ball this year with Jones, Harvey, Verplancken, Long, Banks, Butler and Brown vying for time in the backcourt, and especially now that it sounds like Dembele's health is in question for the season as a backup big. Probably lots of Domask at the 4.
In the era when there was lots of redshirting, I'd say this year would make sense for Butler, Banks or even Brown to consider a redshirt if they're going to play Verplancken, but that doesn't seem to be the mindset too often these days.

D'Avazo will start and get major minutes at the 4. He will be a good one for us this year. No way Banks or Brown would be considered for a redshirt. Banks is ready to contribute as a true frosh and will be backup PG. Butler would be the only redshirt candidate, but as you pointed out, redshirts are going the way of the dinosaur. The main reason for that is the easier transfer rules. Verplancken, Long, Brown and Banks will all get minutes off the bench. I really like the fact that Verplancken and Long are big guards! Verplancken's stats as a true frosh were very impressive last year in D2. Big step up to D1, but he has the size and ability to be good in D1. With Dembele being iffy at best, I hope Filewich is ready to give us minutes as a true frosh. He is going to get his change with only one center. Look for Mulia to play 30 minutes a game if he doesn't get into foul trouble. If Filewich can give us 5-10 minutes I think we will be alright. Barring any surprises, the starting lineup will be Jones PG, Harvey SG, Domask SF, D'Avanso PF and Mulia C. 6'1", 6'5", 6'6", 6'8"& 6'8". A little more size than we have had in some time. Can't wait for the Louisville MTE!!!

Bottom line is this makes playing time much more competitive across the board. I still think this may lead to them going small a fair amount, but we'll see. Definitely makes the depth chart and rotations all the more interesting.
I think the more active players, the better. Not only do you have insurance in case of injury but it’s 2020 and you could be dealing with COVID
This is GREAT news!! The immediate eligibility of Verplancken will ease the pain of not getting a third grad-transfer with the open scholarship. Maybe Brian will put Will Keller on scholarship for his Senior year.
But all winter athletes get an extra year...this is in addition to Verplancken’s immediate eligibility. Will make it interesting for the full incoming recruiting class fall 2021.

One more thought on Verplancken’s eligibility: Bench scoring was a weakness last year and a question for this season. Adding a scorer like this to the mix could be a big lift in that regard.

Verplancken's ability to score will translate well to D1. He can flat out fill it up. Very underrated player, even with the move up in competition. We're really going to enjoy watching this kid the next handful of years.

Let’s hope! This team sure has some potential 3-point shooting firepower: Domask, Harvey Verplancken and D’Avanzo, plus Jones shot it well down the stretch and if Brown can find his shot. I really like the idea of Jones and Banks driving and dishing to all these shooters.

I do not know how the NCAA will make this work with the existing scholarship caps. The linked article below from March, 2020 has discussion regarding the caps about mid way through.
Will a Freshman player for the 20-21 season be able to be on scholarship and play 5 years which would put their last year of eligibility in 24-25? Will the extra eligibility just be for the 20-21 4th and 5th year Seniors currently on rosters? As of now, SIU will have 6 scholarship spots open for the 23-24 season. If those current Sophomores get an extra year, will that limit the scholarships that would have been available for the 23-24 season? Lots of questions that will need answers before this can be equitably enforced...

Agree with all of above and getting pumped for the season to begin. My only concern is rebounding.
Love all the talk about driving, dishing, 3 point sniper shooting and defense. But a glaring deficiency last year was crashing the boards. Hopefully, more length and coaching focus will allow us a few more shots/possessions. Just haven't heard too much about it, or am I missing something?
March on triumphantly!

Last year, SIU didn't have anyone on their roster whom I'd have considered a natural rebounder, especially after Dembele's season-ending injury. What I mean by that is rebounding is more than just size and effort. It's also instinctual. From my understanding, and based on what others have said and written, Muila should be a sizable upgrade in this department. The question with him will be how many minutes can he give? Can he stay out of foul trouble and stay healthy?
Outside of Muila, cleaning up the glass is still a huge question mark that will need answering, even with the uptick in overall size.

I am not predicting Brown will find his shot. But.........I am saying that IF he does, look out valley. Having him come around this season to go along with Domask, Jones, Harvey, etc. would be huge for this team.
