Scenario #1 The Dawgs lose Sunday to UNI, and then a Thursday game to whomever? That would be a 3 game losing streak to end the season. Would this current staff be back, or do you begin the search?
Scenario # 2 The Dawgs win Sunday, receive the #4 seed, win on Friday, but lose on Saturday, would the current staff then be extended? Just curious on thoughts from people.
I certainly hope that it is scenario # 2 with perhaps a surprise win on Saturday. However, I am not convinced any wins will occur after yet another debacle last night.
GO DAWGS!!!
Mullins and his staff are not getting fired after the season, even if they lose the next 2 games. There is always a chance an assistant or two leaves after the season, but it won't be Brendan. They need to give Mullins an extension with a minimum buyout so if things really go south they can make a move with minimal financial damage. Also, he needs the extension for recruiting.
Agree with Re, regardless of what happens in the next 2 games, the head coach remains and gets a 2-3 year extension. I don’t believe he’s on the hot seat at all.
My best guess is a two-year extension, and that it's already baked into the cake regardless of what happens in the next few game. If they want to get tough, perhaps they'll give Mullins a "must make the NCAA Tournament" ultimatum, much as they did with Coach Sauce.

It needed to happen months ago to not ruin recruiting. They've already put him at a disadvantage. I am starting to think our administration is just stupid. I have no confidence in them to do the right thing. Still think they may get rid of Mullins and make an awful hire.

At this point, it seems pretty obvious he’s going to focus on the portal for next year, so as long as he’s got an extension in place at the end of the season he should be able to recruit those kids. I’m sure recruiting high school players for 2024 wasn’t easy and maybe why we didn’t sign anyone.
Maybe the high schoolers they are after haven't announced yet because of the portal all players are delaying their signings to better judge a good fit and get playing time
Yeah, I think HS recruiting is really complicated... You don't want to use up spots on potential portal studs. You don't really want a stud freshman at SIU that slipped through the cracks because you are likely developing a kid for another school. Not the best climate to build a sustainable winner at the mid major level. It's why having a 4 star son (Drake) committed to your roster is really hard to overcome for other teams.
We only offered 3 high school players in the early signing period. One reclassified and the other two signed with bigger programs. Obviously, the main focus is on the portal now.
My take is this, and you can easily argue for or against it but, you go after the BEST players you can get, that fit in the culture of your program. You can't just assume that they will leave, especially if you're one of the loudest supporters of Mullins. The reality is, if you WIN and put yourself to be in the NCAA or NIT, the players are less likely to leave, and you win with the best players you can get.
This team has a very good shot at winning 20 games for the 2nd year in a row, and this years schedule was significantly harder than last year. Hopefully this will allow us to bring in a COUPLE of difference making players. As disappointed as I have been with the continued drought of postseason play, I do firmly believe that we are very close to being able to get back and once we do, I think we can sustain that.
It's possible that there's one more factor in the "what happens next" scenarios. The chancellor very well could be hired as New Mexico State's next president. The interviews have been completed, but a period for public comment runs through Wednesday. So it might be a week or 10 days before we know if Lane is staying or going. That could affect the timetable on any Mullins news. If Lane stays (and I hope he does for SIU's sake), something could get done quickly. If not, everything might wind up being put on hold. Of course, these are just guesses and speculation and should be treated as such.

I agree Lane’s situation is a big wildcard, but putting a resolution (likely an extension) “on hold” for any length of time is not an option without disastrous results. You need clarity, immediately, or recruiting is screwed.

I think X having the year he's had in spite of the sometimes slogging offense could potentially really help us to recruit these difference makers. You can come to SIU, get your hands dirty, play tough D, win, and still be among the national scoring leaders if you've got the chops. I'm sure the coaches will use that.
--Insert something witty here--
I could not agree more. And while there might be some merit to the argument that a defense first, slow offense, team isn't going to attract certain players, ironically enough, the defensive first players are who the staff wants here. Also, there are A LOT of other teams (both Power and Mid Major) that play similarly.
I also think that the positive media we have received from XJ can help in recruiting.

They was true at one time, but id have to disagree now with the portal like it is. Mid majors that make the dance and win a game or two seem to completely blow up in the offseason now. Several the last few years, including where Rupert came from, have completley been dismantled after their good seasons.
