As one of those posters who's barely around any more, for me it comes down to the flood of negativity that permeates nearly every thread here.  If you're upset at Barry, that's fine, but I don't need to see that posted over (and OVER) again.  Right now the Cheeto thread's already up to 300+ posts (and it's even PINNED so it's always the top thread... what does THAT tell you?) - so to me this site's turning into Salukination 2.0.

I'm more than happy to pop on here and discuss actual basketball, whether it's the play on the court, the rankings, other teams in the Valley, etc... but when I know that each and every hoops thread is just another invitation to bash the head coach, who wants to stick around and read that all the time?

I took a quick peek in here during the game yesterday to see how busy it was, but the traffic was terribly small for such a big non-conference game.  The boobirds, while not out in full force yesterday, have effectively done enough damage the past year over on Salukination -  were you seriously expecting a bunch of the regulars coming back to see the same ol' vitriol on a new site?

Should the Dawgs put up a big year, you'll get a bit of a crowd back... but nothing near what Salukination (or the gold standard, Salukitalk) brought in.  The constant drumbeat of negativity pretty much sealed that fate.

We put the Cheetos thread up in an attempt to keep the negativity there.  It really has not been bad on here

Maybe if anything that was objective criticism wasn't labeled as "CHEETOS HUCKY HINSON CHESTER" we could find an objective middle ground. I just don't see that happening.

It hasn't been like people have tried to build the bridges back. It's just that those bridges have consistently been dynamited by those who want Hinson to be worshipped.

P.S. I made the point that maybe we threw out too many Cheetos references a full 37 minutes before you posted all that. I've been seeing similar sentiment on other discussion forums and on Facebook. The problem with that point of view is that it doesn't account for the people clearly disillusioned with the state of things correctly.

I decided to come back to give the board another chance.  I too like the banter and insight on the board.  I am OK with objective criticism of Hinson.  Saluki Nation was getting pretty toxic, so I decided to leave.  100's of pages of the Cheeto eaters saying the same thing over and over.

Regarding Hinson being a salesman a.k.a. huckster.  You cheeto eaters ought to be thankful you have somebody who can convince a family to send their kid to a school going down the toilet in a state going down the toilet.

Yeah. It’s all the bio birds fault for the product on court.

Tradfic is low because the basketball team sucks. It’s not rocket science.

I’m sure it is a mix of kool aid fans finding any criticism intolerable but also the fact people just don’t really give a shit anymore. Look at attendance, negativity didn’t chase people away from actually watching games.  It is a program that hasn’t been relevant in a decade at a dying school.  This is sort of a duh answer people

I would suggest that there are a lot of us in the middle, not Kool-Aid drinkers and not Cheeto eaters.  I love the Salukis and college basketball.  Just giving another point of view of why I stopped participating in the previous forum.

This longtime poster and denizen of game threads and game chat wasn't here Friday because (drum roll...) I FORGOT. Yes, I forgot about an opening game against one of the highest-ranked (deserved or not--it doesn't matter) opponents in recent memory. That is how irrelevant SIU basketball has become for me. It has everything to do with the product on the floor and the coach,* and nothing to do with (completely understandable) "negativity" on this board. FFS.

I understand getting annoyed with every thread turning into Barry bashing, but maybe people can be a bit too sensitive about that? The mods stickied the "Cheetos" thread in an attempt to keep the serious BH bashing there, NOT to ensure that it was always at the top of the basketball message board. Maybe a little benefit of the doubt is in order instead of confirmation bias. (Another thought on that: maybe if you want to see less "negativity," don't breeze in here just to poke that hornet nest? 😛 )

*I did give props to BH in the game thread just now. He did a good job on this game. And I am working really hard to leave it at that. 😛

(Inflammatory political snark)

Like most on here, I dont care for Huckleberry's BS. His walking around the arena after games and clapping to the fans deserves an entry into the fish slapping dance.  gifs.com/gif/monty-python-fish-slapping-dance-AWk2PE

Agree there's no need to bash him on every thread - really gets old.

That was a pretty good effort down at Lexington...good enough to begin to get me interested again as I dedicated enough time to watch the second half.  I might even start to get excited if we can pull out a win against Buffalo.  Then, I will post more.   I will be watching tonight.  I don't particularly like Coach Barry's antics, but I was born in Carbondale and the area is filled with country people who probably like it all a whole lot more than I do.  So what...everything doesn't have to be designed to please me:  I'm a Saluki for life.  I think the Arena will fill up quite nicely if SIU wins a few big games here at the outset.

I have to agree Austin.  BH coached a good game down at Lexington.  Our team looked polished and under control for almost the entire game.  They were only a few three pointers away from staying in that game to the finish.  So yes, we will leave it at that and see whether it will turn into a trend.

I probably post as much on here as anybody, but I do think twice about it or sometimes don't post a comment knowing I have to pick out traffic lights or storefronts every time I log in. Pain in the butt. Is that really necessary?
