The Shockers hosted East Carolina today--won by a few points in what was a reasonably entertaining game to watch (on TV). They're now 12-1, I think.
A question and a comment.
I could look it up...but it's fun to chat.
When did Wichita leave the Valley...and how many years before they left did they dominate the Valley (and SIU)?
My comment: the eye test tells me that the current Saluki squad has exactly zero players who could start for Wichita. Zero. In both basketball skills and body frame/physical maturity--SIU does not match up with Wichita.
(1) US COVID-19 statistics (February 29, 2020-June 16, 2020): 2,124,000 reported cases and 115,052 deaths
(2) Donald Trump (June 15, 2020) told a group of senior citizens that there would be very few cases of COVID-19 if the US stopped its testing and contact tracing: "If we stop testing right now, we'd have very few cases, actually."
(3) Donald Trump [(Jan 20, 2020), when asked if he's worried about a pandemic]: “No. Not at all. And we have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s — going to be just fine.”
Of course they don't. Why would anyone expect anything else from this team that bm had to rebuild overnight?
If you wait a couple of years, Domask would start for Bitchita and possibly Jones.
They've played a lot of wimps. They've also had three really good wins. Okla. Okla St. VCU. They lost by 12 to W. Virginia.
(UNI lost by 5 to W.V. - very close game. W.V. also beat Ohio St. by 8.)
Wichita State is better than you think. Not saying they will, but they have the capability of getting to, and past, the Sweet 16. That being said, let's see how they do in conference.
I don't mean to be rude but it is beyond ridiculous at this point in time to try to compare this team to Wichita. BM did an outstanding job in the short amount of time he had and I really like some of the young players.

They have three very good wins and beat the wimps they were supposed to beat. They also destroyed a schizo S. Carolina (a team UNI also beat). I've watched them a little and they didn't look like a Sweet 16 team in the game I saw. They'll be in the tournament for sure. Marshall's a very good coach.
When you win, have a good coach, and fill your arena with rabid fans, it sure helps recruiting!

I've watched them a lot as I have them in my college hoops "pool". They haven't dominated each and every game for sure, but neither has most teams in the country, including other top 25. And there have been stretches where they have looked as good as anyone I've watched. UNI did beat S. Carolina but also lost to Illinois St. their last time out which goes to show you how difficult it is to win on the road these days !!!!

The comp doesn’t make sense even if SIU wasn’t rebuilding. Wichita doesn’t matter anymore, they’re in a better conference and can sell that to better recruits than SIU. And as you said, Marshall is a damn good coach and sent Valley players to the NBA.
