I am sure this issue has been discussed ad-nauseum over on the "Saluki Players Discussion", but I am too lazy to read through the 50 pages of a thread to get my answer. I'll just come here and ask it:
Will Cade Hornecker redshirt?
There hasn't been much coverage of the team yet (is there not a local media day this year?), so there's very little to go off to answer that. The consensus in the other thread is that, if they are going to redshirt anyone this season, Hornecker and/or Ferguson would seem to make the most sense, but we should find out within the next couple weeks ... season opener is two weeks from today.
Nobody covers the team anymore except Reis, so who knows? We didn’t know Ebube and Wonders were redshirting last season until they didn’t get any run at the beginning of the season, and even then nobody reported they were redshirting.
I really don’t see the need for it, minutes are tight for bigs but this team needs to win now and if Hornecker can contribute in a positive way, he should be playing. I thought the same for Ebube/Wonders last year.
The Alabama exhibition game may give us some clues as to who, if anyone is red-shirting. Also, there is an open practice for season ticket holders Tuesday night. That probably won't provide too much insight, but will be interesting to see.
I don't think a 3 star recruit signed with us to be a redshirt. I believe he will get consistent minutes by the conference season.

I 95% agree with this statement by @rafflaw. Only difference is I believe his consistent minutes will come sooner than the conference season.

Actually "someone" last September said in a post not to be surprised if Ebube redshirted, although he was being described by athletic department as freakishly athletic.

I’d be extremely surprised to see Hornecker redshirt.
I would not redshirt anyone. All men on deck. Let's win the damn conference and get back to the NCAA's where we belong. If a player is upset for not getting playing time, work harder. Opportunities are there for the taking. Go Dawgs!

I get and appreciate the sentiment here ... I just think the bar for it not to make sense for Hornecker to redshirt is somewhat high, given the depth at that spot, including a fifth-year senior in Muila, a guy who started in NCAA wins last March in Rupert and a guy with a more DI-ready body coming off a redshirt season in Ebube.
If Hornecker is good enough to beat out some of those guys for playing time, great ... that probably means he's adding something from an offensive standpoint that the others are not, and that's definitely the end of the floor where the team needs the most improvement.
As for those that say we could play big with two of those guys out there at the same time, I'm not opposed, but I'll believe it when I see it ... so far, Mullins' preference has been for smaller lineups.

Agreed!
I made it a point to watch half a dozen of his games in tournaments his senior season. My only reservation about him was he had a high school frame, build wise. I met him this summer at the meet and greet and he has very sturdy legs, according to SIU athletic website he is up to 240 lbs now. He has a nice jump shot, makes free throws, and is very smart and a very hard worker (a teammate’s words, not mine). I say he plays. Oh yeah, he is 7’ tall too.

Every pre-season we have this discussion, but the truth is no one knows who will be redshirting or who is truly capable of making an impact early on. Last off-season there were those who thought Wonders might redshirt due to concerns of the competition level he faced in high school. Conversely, there were others who had him in the starting lineup and even some had him making all freshmen team. Similar arguments were made about Ebube. Cade has a high ceiling indeed, especially since you cannot teach size. That being said, historically, 7'+ players (at least at the mid major level) tend to take longer to acclimate to D-1 basketball. I guess what I'm saying is, I/we still have no idea of who will actually redshirt, but considering the numbers, there IS a chance Cade will.
My final thought is this, **IF** Cade does not end up redshirting and, in fact does make a big impact, this team may very well win the conference and I for one will be ecstatic.
I don't think he redshirts. He's not some skinny 7 footer that needs to add strength. At the scrimmage last night he took a hard shove from Ebube under the basket and still made the shot. I hope he plays this year.
Hornecker played 2 minutes on Saturday, both in the 2nd half. With Muila potentially out with an injury and missed the exhibition, my redshirt meter is off the charts. Really don’t think we see Hornecker this year.
