I don't see why more guys don't want to redshirt.  I would rather compete against 21 and 22 year old guys when I was 21 or 22 and not 17 or 18.

I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!

I think the staff knows the risks but also I think the staff is going after guys with the understanding there might be a redshirt.  I also think they’re going after guys committed to the program for the 4-5 years.  Now, you never know what can happen if a big school gets in their ears and shows big NIL money.

Personally, don’t like the redshirts.  I think this team needs to try and go all-in on winning now.  Hornecker feels like a guy that might not be ready at the beginning of the season but can develop into that guy by the end but I also don’t see daily practices so who knows.

If he's good enough to play, and I'm betting he's way better than some of the other bigs on the offensive end - possibly even a better FT shooter than J.D., I'd play him. I do wonder why he only played 2 minutes in our blowout loss to Bama.

We live in the dark ages of the transfer portal, so play your talent while you have it.

Such drama! A nine point game is a blowout? It seemed to me that Alabama did their damnest to win the game until late in second half when they started subbing, and Southern played virtually the enter roster at one time or another.

I guess your glass is really half full. Late in the game they were up by 21 while only shooting 13% from 3. Meanwhile, they were destroying us on the boards by 17 rbs. That 9 pt margin is deceiving - game wasn't nearly that close. Hope we're better than that disappointing performance.

@mr_woogers as he stated though… Alabama played their top guys most of the game until the end. SIU was subbing throughout.  SIU won’t do that in the regular season. It’s a bit of an apples to oranges comparison if you think SIU just scored a lot during the “garbage time”. You could realistically say the same about Bama, against SIU bench players in the middle of the game. Two coaches with 2 very different strategies to an exhibition game. It is what it is. We lost by 9, not 21.

I’ve been at two practices. One public one and one private one. During the private one, I felt that he was the best center we have on the team right now. Someone very connected to the program said the same thing to me. But as the exhibition suggests, he looks like an extreme redshirt candidate. I truly am shocked by that.

I listened to most of the 2nd half. They were kicking our butts when we were playing Jones, Domask, Rupert, Johnson. Check out the minutes in the box score. As a matter of fact, they distributed their minutes very evenly among 9 players, whereas our starters got most of the minutes. They had 7 guys with over 20 minutes, one with 19,  and their 9th had 17 minutes as well as scoring 10 pts with 8 rbs.

That they just played their starters is not true at all.

Nothing really impressive about our performance, but it was nice to see Bank 4 for 5 and Wonders 3 for 4. Lance had 3 steals.

Domask played 33 minutes. Jones only played 21 but was coming off an injury. I don't think the outcome against Alabama can be chalked up to Southern not playing their better players. BTW, who really are Southern's top players after those two? Unclear at this point.

Back to the main point of this thread, hopefully we find out more both about Muila's injury status and Hornecker's potential redshirt status soon.

I just don't think redshirting Cade is the right thing to do.  As has already been said, in the transfer portal era, it is dangerous to sit a player who could end up transferring.  Secondly, Cade was a legitimate 3 star player for a reason.  Get him some playing time and get him ready to play longer minutes when we need him to.

If Cade can help SIU compete and / or beat SLU, OK state, and win the MVC title then he should play

I fully understand the concern with relation to redshirting and the portal, but think one could argue that it is equally concerning to not redshirt a player and then have them ride the pine for a year, only getting a few minutes here or there and then losing a year of eligbility and possibily frustrating the player even more.

It is often posted how "we trust in Mullins" but so often question his coaching of the team.  If the coach, who knows infinitely more than anyone on this board about a specific player, feels that a redshirt may be the best thing for the player's development and the teams FUTURE, than I'm all for it.

As far as who looks good in practice........ well, it's just that, practice.

Perhaps we'll find out a little more today about this and other matters leading up to the season.
