SIU can turn this around with the appropriate changes and sustainable vision for the future. There are still A Lot of folks....too many, that are opposed to change and that's a big problem. Time to get over it and get onboard or find another job.
Seeing one's coworkers receiving pink slip is pretty powerful motivation to get your act together.

Sounds like a good idea. Do upperclassman get their own rooms? That doesn't seem right and a big waste of money and resources not packing them in.

Just reading between the lines, it seems as though they are expecting some increase in freshman enrollment. Maybe the existing dorm rooms are at capacity.

The existing dorms are at capacity, and they do expect a larger freshman class next year.
University of Illinois Commitment:
Four years Tuition Free.
Starting with our 2019 incoming class, we'll cover tuition and fees for up to four years for all qualified in-state students. That's our mission as a land-grant institution. That's Illinois Commitment.
- In-state students
- $61,000 & under family income
- Your family's assets are less than $50,000
- Effective fall 2019
- If you don’t meet the criteria to qualify for Illinois Commitment, there are other financial aid options available to help cover the cost of an Illinois education.
- 70% percent of Illinois undergraduate students receive financial aid and 51% receive gift aid funds that do not need to be repaid.
Southern has serious competition for high school students from working class families.

The towers are going to be reopened and only 1 person per room / 2 per suite. That will probably help a little. At least that part of the campus won't look so abandoned.

Reading this thread made me sad. 🙁
SIU's administration has to get this enrollment situation straightened out. That's priority #1. This is year's of bad decisions and quite honestly incompetence at the highest levels in SIU's administration over several years.

I'm sure they'll resolve the issue by hiring even more administrative staff and NOT by addressing the reasons enrollment is down.

Spring 2019 enrollment numbers continue to suffer. Under 10,000.

SIU needs to seriously consider doing some actual surveys of alumni whose kids are not going to SIU and actually listen to what they are told. They also need to do some surveys of college level kids in the 12th grade to get some sort of idea why siue, isu, semo, murray st seem to be doing ok and we're floundering. The solution is quite possibly to stop doing stupid shit and firing those in charge of ramming stupid shit down the college's throat. I would also get a list of the most worthless degrees (based on actual post graduation statistics keep politics out of it) and phase those out. If we have to give up our research institution status to cut the dead wood treat it like amputating a gangrene limb to save the patient.
I'd advise going to say Pennsylvania or Ohio and finding a public university doing well and basically rent a competent administrator from one of those successful colleges to bring their org chart for comparison and they spend a semester on campus studying our processes to get to the bottom of our mess. It would be the best 100k the college has ever spent.

The SIU Board has approved a nursing program for the Carbondale campus. There is a potential for 300 students to enroll in the program. That would be a positive step in increasing enrollment. It would also help the area as there is a serious shortage of nurses.
FINALLY! I heard this on WBBM News Radio in Chicago this morning. SIU used to have a dedicated presence in Chicago and they pulled the plug on it several years ago (clearly didn't work out well). Glad to hear SIU is re-upping their Chicago presence.
