Spring 2019 enrollment numbers continue to suffer. Under 10,000.
Wow, just wow! As an '88 grad, when SIU was at over 20,000 enrollment, I just can't fathom how empty that campus must seem with only 10,000 students.
And I'll admit, my son never considered SIU and is now attending a DII in western Colorado (he's a Jr. at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction; enrollment is just over 11,000). They offered him in-state tuition and they have a goal of being at 15,000 students within a decade. An extremely well run university with great leadership... kind of like what SIU used to be.
Tough to watch the school and the state overall become a shadow of itself.
`Disturbing. Happening everywhere but U of I and Redturd State.
NIU on campus enrollment ~12700 (25K 10 years ago) (total including Rockford and suburban campus - 15K+)
EIU on campus enrollment ~3800
WIU on campus enrollment ~5700
At least we're finally boosting recruiting. Dunn's buddy Colwell had his thumb up his sphincter for three years, not even hiring an enrollment manager.
Still think if we dropped tuition substantially, enrollment would shoot up.
Very discouraging. uofi simply cannibalizes the kids that would normally go to another one of the state schools to keep their enrollment in check.

I suppose if we rolled back staffing level (actual or staffing/student) back to 90s levels that might let them reduce tuition a lot. Is there any good stats on payroll expenditures since the early 80s?

It's pretty astonishing that SIU hasn't had recruits on the ground in those two areas, given how many students come from those two metros. Just yet another item to add to a long list of f*** ups by this university.
With more students opting for a less traditional college education "Online", especially for advanced degrees.
SIU's Online MBA program $36,000
University of Illinois Online MBA Program $22,000
Murray State Online MBA Program $23,000
Where would you opt to go?
Yet we ask again why Southern not growing?

That looks an awful lot like "paying for a certification" that Mike Rowe speaks of....
I think it is well established the administration is detached itself from reality. Why so much? What was the total payroll dollars/student in 1990 vs. today? What are the total bodies on the payroll/student in 1990 vs. today? Sometimes shining a ray of sunlight on a problem is the best solution.

Hey I have my certificate from ITT, it is just that, a certificate that says I know something about electronics, and I am trainable.Half of the general education classes I had at SIU were the same ones I had in highschool, just I got college credit for them at SIU. (calculus and biology were even the same books) and gave a few answers that taught the grad assistants or teachers something.
Rowe is speaking of 4 year degrees when he makes that reference not trade schools which he fully supports. I would agree we need a whole lot more ITT and a whole lot less communication, psychology, and lesbian dance theory majors. I would also agree a significant amount of course content at SIU used to be taught in HS. I left my high school (Murphysboro), came back after 6 years in the service, and clep/proficiency out of a ton of stuff even with a 6 year break.

We have recruited those areas for a very long time, and effectively. We just have not had a regional person living in the St Louis Metro area. That will now change.

I know they've long been prime recruiting grounds, I'm just shocked they've not had someone on the ground permanently in those locations
I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!
Heard from multiple people that enrollment will be under 10,000 in the fall. Hopefully this is the bottoming out of it. Seems like the university has made strides in recruitment efforts and I’ve been told open houses recently have attracted more students than expected. A lot has been going in the right direction recently financially and with leadership, so maybe it will reflect on enrollment after this coming year.
STL and the Metro East should have been the primary recruiting grounds for a while running along with Chicago suburbs and the areas surrounding SIU.
Good thing enrollment management is finally unchained.
I hate to be a boo bird but I think I found the problem. It seems we are adjusting tuition to cover what we'd like to spend versus paring down the bureaucracy to fall in line with what people will pay for tuition. You'd think SIU could hire a consultant for this sort of thing. I would be happy to volunteer a week of my time to go over the books with SIU and straighten these issues out.
