Ricky Hurley, Jr., Southern Illinois (Fox River Grove, Ill.)
Missouri Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Week - April 3, 2018
Ricky Hurley tallied three top-3 finishes and a pair of top-10 school marks at the Mondo Team Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native won the hammer throw, took second in the shot put and placed third in the discus to score 24 points and help Southern win the men’s team title. In the hammer throw, Hurley won with a toss of 204’-4” (62.29m), which was the seventh-best throw in school history and he later took second in the shot put with the eighth-best mark in program history at 59’-8.25” (18.19m). Hurley and North Dakota’s Steffan Stroh are the only two athletes in the NCAA West Region to currently rank in the top-50 of all three throwing disciplines, as the four-time all-conference honoree ranks 13th in the west region in the shot put, 15th in the hammer throw and 46th in the discus. Hurley also holds the top spot in the Missouri Valley Conference in both the hammer and the discus and ranks second in the shot put.

SIU thrower Jared Kern has been named Missouri Valley Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week following his performances at the Tennessee Relays, the conference announced Tuesday. This marks the fifth time that Kern has taken home the honor this season and the 10th time that he has done so in his career.
Kern notched the fourth-longest shot put heave in the NCAA West Region at the Tennessee Relays over the weekend. The Machesney Park, Ill., native took second in the shot after he threw 64'-6" (19.66m) on his fourth attempt. Not only was it an outdoor personal-best, but the 2017 Indoor All-American moved up to No. 8 in the NCAA in the event.
Former Saluki track great Ivory Crockett was honored this weekend at the meet for his setting the world's record in the 100-yard dash at the relays in 1974.
