Saluki golfer Peyton Wilhoit has been named MVC's Golfer of the Week for the sixth time this year and for the seventh time in his career.

Wilhoit finished third overall this past weekend in the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate at Arkansas State and made the All-Tournament team with a score of 209 being 10 under par.  He finished in the top 15 in his seventh-straight tournament, including five top-five finishes and two tournament titles.

St. Louis, Mo./MVC - This week's MVC golfers of the week feature Southern Illinois' Peyton Wilhoit and Drake's Drew Ison.

The Southern Illinois University men's golf team finished in 11th place out of 17 teams at the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday. Weather conditions deteriorated throughout the day with temperatures dropping into the 40s with strong winds out of the north. Sunday's final round was canceled.  As has been the case all season, SIU's Peyton Wilhoit (+1) was unfazed by the conditions and fired rounds of 73 and 72. The top-ranked golfer in the Missouri Valley Conference finished the tournament tied for 12th place and six strokes off the pace set by Central Florida's Bobby Bai (-5).  The 17-team field featured eight Top-100 teams, and among those, the Salukis eclipsed Miami (66), Wisconsin (85) and Ohio State (65) in the team standings.

Salukis tied for second place after two rounds at Dalhousie.  We are 19 strokes off the lead with one round left tomorrow.

Saluki golfer Peyton Wilhoit earned an at-large invitation to the 2018 NCAA Men's Golf Tournament.  He is only the second men's golfer from the Valley to receive an at-large bid in the past 15 years.  He is the first SIU golfer to earn an at-large invite since 1972.  Quite an accomplishment for the SIU golf program!

He will compete against four other golfers in the regional at the University of Oklahoma from May 14 to May 16.  The low score advances to the NCAA finals.

Oklahoma Regional (Sagarin ranking)

  1. Ian Snyman, North Texas (76)
  2. McClure Meissner, SMU (138)
  3. Peyton Wilhoit, Southern Illinois (145)
  4. Chris Korte, Denver (203)
  5. Tanner Napier, Arkansas State (240)

Coach does a great job recruiting JUCo's, the best he can get at high school level and international players

That's awesome!  Thanks to Mr. Wilhoit for a great season and for representing SIU in a first class manner.

Hope we can keep this golf coach

Is there rumblings of him leaving? I hope not, he has clearly elevated the profile of SIU’s golf program, including being the first coach here to win a conference title.

No rumors, it's just that when our coaches have success they may want a bit better salaries--can't blame them.

Sounds like another good signing for Fetcho and the program.
