Because the team is a Hinson style mirage. Played a really bad schedule, loaded up on wins against bad teams, not competitive against good teams. Also Rhodes refuses to recruit prep players and actually build the program and instead exclusively recruits older transfers who weren't good at their last school and mediocre JUCO players in a perpetual rebuild with zero consistency.
I have to say, I’m surprised you’re still pushing the “you can only build a program through prep players” rhetoric when the team is in the running for a conference championship with 2 weeks to go.
That just goes to show that that rhetoric is, like I said before the season started, nonsense.
Turning over the team every year and refusing to recruit prep players is not "building a program". It is a perpetual rebuild. And his teams have been routinely mediocre to middling at best.
Even this year they were pretty awful against the top teams in the conference.
