and go
Not Saluki news, but I heard an interview today with Chris Holtman (Ohio State coach). He was asked how to build upon an above-expectation year that the Buckeyes had and how to sustain a culture of winning. His repeated direct answer to that was consistent recruiting, class balance, & winning the recruiting battle in your backyard. Pretty simple formula. Makes me worried about the lack of class balance we have right now at SIU. Even if we do well next year, we're gonna blow our load early.
Class balance is important--but we still have three recruiting periods (April 2018, Nov. 2018 and April 2019) to more even up the roster--hopefully we'll score a few more in those three
Class balance can be addressed in a lot of ways. I am not really concerned about that. Yes, we have a senior heavy class this coming year, but we have also been pretty successful in JC recruits and with the number of openings we will have available if they are split between a mix of incoming freshman and JC jr's then it can even up quickly. The issue that following year will be having the number of newcomers be able to blend together quickly enough.
I like the 4 year recruits the best also, but we have been Lucky with several of our latest JC recruits
Probably a crap shoot of sorts with any recruit 4 year OR transfer--I guess the down sides of 4 year guys for a mid like us is that if you make a mistake it could be 4-5 years before you get that scholie back and/or if he redshirts and develops AND graduates in four years he may be gone to a Major as a grad transfer in his fourth playing year---it's not exactly like the old days where you could always depend on a fifth year senior being here
I think it's pretty simple. You need to use all avenues to gather talent...HS kids/JUCO/Transfers/Grad Transfers(harder for Mids). #1 focus should be getting quality HS kids and trying to get your program to a place where you can RS them. You cannot be fearful of losing them after their 4th year, it happens.
What seems to work for mid majors is getting gym rat undersized pissed off guards and teaching them pit bull aggressive defense...then multiply by 12.
I think Cook and possibly McGill fit that bill
Except no one on the SIU staff can teach the defense like Loyola just showed in the NCAAs.
Lloyd must just come by it naturally
Look forward to updates on 2019 basketball recruiting, should be a stellar class 😱 Hinson can tell the recruits he has to win or he is out that should sell well.
check out the thread on transfers--I think the consensus is the Weher has a good possibility of transfering since he played little and may be grad transfer eligible. Perhaps Rudy, but less so
