Right now, I don’t think there’s enough scoring to start Muila but you add a guy that can fill it up, I think you can live with Muila’s lack of scoring because of his defense

His defense isn't even that good.

Based on what?

He is an average rebounder and mediocre shot blocker. His positioning is poor. He fouls too much. And other teams frontcourts score on him pretty effortlessly.

Neat. Explain how he scored a 25.0 DPBR which led the team by a huge margin. The second highest on the team was Jones at 6.3

His 26.2% defensive rebounding % would be 34th in all of college basketball if he hit the 40% minutes played limit (he played 37.3% of minutes)

Not that Spike has much hoops credibility left, but this tired line of critique does not help his cause. I'm sure the coaches didn't play him for his scoring prowess, and I'm damn sure they didn't play him for his free throw touch, so they must have seen something in him defensively.

Count me among those who are hoping a more well-rounded option emerges to start at the 5, but I definitely see value in Muila as a defense/rebounding-oriented contributor in the frontcourt.

I don’t need to see Muila playing 30 minutes a night, and don’t think they will given his injury history, but I think there’s some value there.  Especially now that he’s played a year of Division 1 basketball.  There’s likely going to be a rotating group of Muila, Ebube, Hornecker, and the transfer no matter what

Spike, time for you to pick a new sport.  You obviously couldn't even pick a basketball out of a police line-up.  Stop embarrassing yourself.

I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!

I liked what I saw out of JM. He ran the floor, hustled after the basketball and was an asset as a defensive obstacle under the basket. Sounds like a Saluki to me. He was not great at offensive rebounds going back up or drawing fouls doing the same, but he had the presence of mind to kick it back out and restart another sequence. If he plays 15-20 minutes with others rotating through, he will certainly contribute to grind it out games. Think that will be common again next year in the Valley.

Ebube will be starting at the 5 next year with Muila spelling him.  Maybe not to start the season, but soon enough.  He's going to be a stud.  Hornecker might redshirt (or not).

Foster Wonders may end up starting at the 3 eventually.  He's going to be a prolific scorer.  D'Amico is going to be a year better, too.

Sure, it would be nice to sign another transfer or two.  And I think we will.  But it's not like the cupboard is bare.

I will admit to hoping for more out of him, though I knew it was unlikely. So kind of dumb on my part, but I'm obviously not alone. This was a kid who had double Ibbe Djimde/Thik Bol-type injuries: it is no wonder he was tentative. That he could contribute at all after that is amazing.

(That he didn't take that rehab time to improve his FT technique--and that the staff didn't insist on it--is . . . ugh: not OK.)

WTF?

@rockin-dawg

I like your optimism and your general set-up, but I would like Domask at the 3. Smaller lineup would have Wonders there and D at the 4.

I hope all these new guys pan out and that we will have more options than we've had the last couple of years. A lot depends on whether the bigs work out.

Yes. Many. They just don't define "success" as sales goals in Cedar Falls or Omaha.

Depressing AF.

I'm not psychologist, although I did stay at a Holiday Express once, but if someone posts negative comments about a specific player in a majority of their posts, I would GUESS that they hate that player or person.  I also think that particular person is likely a troll.  For anyone who doubts this, a certain poster was hating on Muila before he played a single minute so their use of hindsight, even incorrectly used, doesn't cover up the fact that they have an issue with this person.  And it has nearly gotten him kicked off this board and I promise to celebrate with a nice cold beer if and when it finally happens.  Critique and discussion is what makes this board great but the constant negativity and hate for a certain player(s) is not.
