I see no reason why Peyton would not be a good player in the valley. Super talented. Just don’t get the 40 minutes of action for a bad Pitt team.
FWIW, this article indicates he is very athletic but briefly references there might be some shortcomings with fundamentals/other intangibles that held him back: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/Pitt/2022/03/17/pitt-panthers-basketball-chris-payton-transfer-portal/stories/202203170139

I think D'Amico is going to be a very good all around player for us. He is relatively athletic, but not in the same league athletically as Payton. If Payton commits and can get up to speed by the start of the season, I would feel really good with Payton starting at the 4, Johnson starting at PG and quality backups at those positions in D'Amico and Banks.
Very exciting news on Payton! We have a good core here, and the thought of us getting exactly the two things on our own wish list makes me really excited about November.
Let’s go win a Championship!

Not much there
Payton played just 40 minutes across 13 games in his lone season with the program, averaging 0.8 points and 0.8 rebounds per game. The uber-athletic 6-foot-7 junior would regularly dazzle in warmups — throwing down high-flying, acrobatic dunks — but there were holes in other, more fundamental aspects of his game that prevented him from seeing consistent playing time.
I'll gladly take Payton's athleticism and let the rest sort itself out. That aspect alone will get him playing time. We need athletes.

I can envision him at the 5 (at times) with his size, athleticism and ability to rebound when SIU plays a "small lineup".

Glad to hear you are getting closer to normal. 😀
Stupid old central Illinois joke. Welcome to the hood.
March on triumphantly!

I take it he's not highly thought of by the hometown crowd? Is there a reason the Redbirds passed on him? Please elaborate.

That's what you get when you mess with the Caroline Twins.

I'm not from Bloomington, but this is what I remember. I'm sure the central IL folks can give us even more info. Just as a refresher - He committed to us as a HS SR. He ended up not qualifying and went Juco. Also, he had some real problems, both disciplinary and academic his senior year. He was either kicked off or quit their HS team late in the season.
I do say if he has cleaned up his act in the 3 years since HS, and can be a good citizen and student I am all for bringing him on board. I don't think Mullins would extend an offer if he thinks he is still a potentially disruptive presence.
