Hopefully there's a better option out there or a 2nd option lined up
Not good another miss. Glad we got Xavier Johnson he will help. A little concerned with all these misses.
Wondering if fellow Indian Hills JUCO J'vonne Hadley could still be in the cards. But yeah, I've never thought this transfer portal culture was a particularly good fit for Bryan Mullins, and I haven't seen a lot these past couple years to convince me otherwise. Seems like he and his staff are better suited to build recruiting relationships the old fashioned way, with high school kids. Whether that will work in this era remains to be seen ... and the problem is, in this last cycle, there were some tough misses with key high school targets, too.
Not worried. We’re 1-2 good pieces away from being a really strong squad. And that’s not really including our question marks with redshirts and new guys
Would’ve like the have the athleticism of Payton but there was not guarantee on his ability.
Trust the process.

Unless someone has inside info how do we know this was a miss? Maybe it was or maybe they weren't impressed with his workout and were holding out for someone else and he didn't want to wait. As has been pointed out previously, he only played 40 total minutes last year for 11-21 Pitt.

All WHAT misses?? We don't really know if Payton was option A, B, C, or Z. Yes, I'm a little disappointed. He's obviously a very good athlete. But if we here at Saluki Insider have a list of 30 players we suspect SIU is recruiting, then the Coaching Staff probably has a list twice that long. Let's not get too discouraged just yet.

Another miss??? In reverse order: Hornecker, Wonders, Ebube, D’Amico. Please tell me who is the “miss” in that group? What makes “us” think “we” know so much more than this coaching staff? Tell me again please why Payton did not play at Pitt? Yeah, another “miss”. Get a grip.
The advancement and diffusion of knowledge is the only guardian of true liberty.

I was honestly meh on Payton. Who knows if he was Option A but the fact that he couldn't get on the court at Pittsburgh was concerning. That being said, I would have been bought in if we got him because the athleticism is something this team lacks. I still think there are some good options out there.

I'm excited about Hornecker, Wonders, and Ebube but we haven't see any of the 3 yet so hard to tell if they were actually recruiting wins. I think missing out on NJ Benson to a rival MVC school hurts. Don't know if he's good yet but that's a Southern Illinois kid with a ton of athleticism that we're looking for.
And I get losing kids to Loyola but missing out on Jalen Quinn sucks. There's an Illinois Wolves connection with 2 of our coaches, that was one of the benefits of hiring Bryan (and his brother).
I'm still higher on this team today than I was at the end of the season with the addition of Xavier Johnson and hopefully another good player but I don't think recruiting has been great since the first class. But obviously Wonders, Ebube, and Hornecker's play might change that.

Another athletic forward. 6'7 235 12.5 pts 7.6 rbs

His JC stats on rebounding were excellent. His scoring? I don't consider a 6'7" power forward who scored 12.5ppg in JC much of an answer to our offensive needs.
The fact that he picked Kent of the MAC over an up and coming MVC team says it all. Yes Kent won 23 games. They also got blown out in the MAC tourney final and lost to S. Utah in some anonymous post season tournament. And most telling of all? They lost to a horrible NIU team that didn't even qualify for the MAC tournament.
Keep looking!

SIU lost to Northeastern, Little Rock and didn’t sniff its conference tournament title game. Let’s be reasonable, shall we?

There are still so many names on this list that would be literal game-changers next season:

Conference DPOY? Very interesting!
Our win/loss record has been the biggest deterrent for recruiting victories. The staff is working hard and recruiting the type of player we need, just had lots of misses lately. As been said, we’ve got to start winning games and be top tier in conference.

They desperately need someone that can score. Wonders will help and Johnson will make everyone better but Coupet’s scoring hasn’t really been replaced yet and they weren’t a great offensive team with him.
