I really like the add and feel it is an upgrade from Verplancken. He averaged almost 13 points a game on a team in the Valley that was even more limited on offense than SIU. We are moving in the right direction hopefully we add a couple of more pieces soon.

I'm guessing Newton comes off the bench?  Not a bad backup if so, seems like a Verplancken replacement as opposed to the starting 3/4.

He does have some injury history from last year I think with his knee.

SIU has a commitment from a familiar face.  Jawaun Newton of Evansville:

https://twitter.com/JawaunNewton/status/1521179135686721541

Newton should have 1 year left.  6'3, averaged 12.7 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 1.2 APG last year.

#737 player in the portal on EvanMiya (-0.3 OBPR, -3.9 DBPR, -4.2 BPR projections for 2023)

Welcome Jawaun!! Very exciting news!

I like the Newton signing. He and Givance were far and away Evansville's best players the last 2 years. He is more athletic than Verplancken. He was averaging 13.8 points and an impressive 5.8 rebounds before he hurt his knee. He came back for their mvc tourney game, but aggravated the knee injury. If he is 100% recovered, it is an excellent signing. He is a proven scorer. He can score from the outside or drive to the hoop. He is very good at scoring through contact. He is a guy who can go get his shot, which we need.

Not sure if this is the home run we were looking for but adding a double digit scorer to essentially replace a non-double digit scorer, and one who also rebounds very well for a guard (similar to Jones) is definitely a solid pick up.  He can be a great option off the bench and is already better than any other guard option we have (currently on the bench).  I also like that he has a lot of Valley experience so he is more of a known commodity, and therefore has a higher floor.

If you can get a guard who started for another MVC team, you take him.

Where do we sit with numbers, now? We still have one more to give for next year, right?

Have one more scholarship as of right now.  Next year becomes very interesting with the amount of Seniors on this team.  Newton for sure will be an open scholarship.  Still think we might have as many as 6 open scholarships.

Yes, one as of now, but to me the Newton signing raises even more questions about Harvey returning. You now have Johnson, Jones, Newton, Wonders, Banks and Brown in the backcourt. Hard to see much more PT available for him.

He can score from the outside, but 3-point shooting has not been a strength over his career.

Very solid pickup and good job to the staff. If we can get a solid 4 guy, no reason we can’t win the valley.

I'm with you. I figured Harvey was likely to move on after the season. Even more so now.

I think yesterday was the deadline to get into the portal, and we haven't heard any news today, so appears he's sticking with it.

Really hope we get an athletic wing / forward who can take the ball to the hoop with this last spot.

Yes, very true, he is just an average 3 point shooter. Verplancken was a much better 3 point shooter. However, Newton is more athletic and much more of a scorer and rebounder than Verplancken. Newton has a pull up jumper, turn around jumper, can drive, and is very athletic around the rim. Also, Newton is a very good free throw shooter and gets to the line exponentially more than Verplancken did. This is not to say I didn't like Verplancken, I did. It's just that Newton is way more of a scorer and rebounder, both of which SIU really needs in a guard.

I don't know if the staff expected to lose Verplancken but it's a nice save if they didn't.  Think Verplancken might be slightly better but Newton provides more scoring, which this team needs.

He was 375th in the country in defensive rebounding % and 164th in turnover rate, so he takes care of the ball.

We're basically in the same position now that we were in before the Verplancken transfer.  Still think the next transfer needs to be another athletic scorer that can start at the 3/4.
