Three in-state players who have visited Southern are on this list of top 10 class of 2022 Illinois prospects heading into the July AAU events: Quinn, Benson and Avila.

We offered Quinn and Benson. I don't think we officially offered Avila.
We also offered Schutt his sophomore year, but he’s going power 5 for sure. That would have been a steal!

Another point guard on our radar: 6'3 Brandon Brown from Bristol, TN
Benson would be a great get locally being from Mt. Vernon and he wouldn't be a reach given he's had big programs looking at him.

When is the last time that we had this high level of a recruit locally? I know there was the kid from Marion a couple years back, but it seems that he was more of a low major player by the interest he was getting.

I think we’ve recruited a few local products recently, none at Benson’s level though. I know we had interest in Jackson Connor from Marion and he went to John A. Logan. And Noah Franklin of Cobden went to Southwest Baptist University in Missouri. I didn’t follow recruiting much with the last coach but Missouri State had Ross Owens from Woodlawn a few years ago.

Southern has had some very good local players in the "modern era," (Rick Shipley, Rashad Tucker, Troy Hudson, Shane Hawkins, Kent Williams, Matt Shaw, etc.), but not so much recently. No, not going to count Smithpeters with that group.
Cassity (SLU), O'Rear (UNI) and Frederking (Evansville) are a few other southern Illinois kids who come to mind who went elsewhere semi-recently.
Benson would be an exciting southern Illinois recruit if they can close the deal with him.

If someone on the coaching staff doesn’t send him a clip of the last minute of the 2007 NCAA 2nd round game, it’s recruiting malpractice. 😀

We'll see if our connection to the Illinois Wolves pays off again. Last year: Scottie Ebube. We offered Quinn early (9/1/2020) but the Power 5 schools are showing interest.
Quinn’s recruitment was already gaining steam with the Wolves over the summer and I expect that will continue over the next month or two. At this point, I would expect he goes Power 5.

With a PS that reads "this was the second time we beat Va Tech that year".
