Early signing period is a little over 6 weeks away............... thoughts on how many. if any, may sign that day?
This is a really odd cycle in that without knowing if Domask, Jones or Brown will stay for the extra year, the scholarship count has a lot of volatility. As it stands they should have at least two (Newton, Muila).
I hope they sign at least 1-2 high school guys this fall before the focus turns to the spring transfer frenzy. I believe most Valley programs have at least one verbal for the ‘23 class already, so it’d be nice to get going with a quality verbal or two.
I believe that they get the extra scholarships because of covid. The first class that won't will be Foster Wonders class. But not 100 percent sure.

Think that was only last year. Any returning player will count as a scholarship as far as I know
What about athletic scholarships?
Athletes who decide to use their extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic are not guaranteed a full scholarship, or even the ability to compete. One caveat to the NCAA’s ruling on an extra year of eligibility is that individual schools and conferences have the authority to adopt this rule or not. This means that some schools may allow seniors to return for an extra year of eligibility, while others may choose not to offer this due to program budgets, housing availability, etc.
Ultimately, it’s the school’s and coach’s decision to decide if they want to extend their scholarship limit to include fifth year seniors or transfers. The determining factor is whether or not a school can afford to give scholarships over the maximum.
Based on this it appears that if a school can afford to give the money for scholarships over the max they can.
Regardless of the technicalities of the rule, I don't see SIU (or most teams) wanting to carry more scholarship guys than the usual 13 because there just isn't playing time available for that many guys, so it's not great for team morale/chemistry, especially in such a transfer-happy climate. So, I do think the decisions of this year's seniors will factor heavily into the recruiting approach for the 2023 class ... maybe those decisions won't be known until after the season, but eventually they will be big factors in how aggressive the coaches need to be with bringing guys in.
What needs to be considered is the nature of kids leaving today. The transfer portal is obviously a huge difference in todays world. SIU will recruit a number of players and sign who they need ...The numbers will work out, one way or the other.
Phelps committed to Utah State.
Fall signing period is next month. So far, nada.
Fall recruiting has been EXTREMELY quiet. I have only heard of 2 recruits on an official visit this fall. With Phelps committing elsewhere that leaves Kennard Davis jr who visited earlier this fall as the other visitor still non committed. Seems there would be more recruits on campus on an official visit besides these 2? Surely there have been more ? Anyone have any updates?

It has been quiet. Traditionally homecoming weekend is one where coaches will try to get kids in for visits but I didn't hear/see anything from last weekend.
I think it's fair to say recruiting these past couple cycles has been pretty challenging for the staff. That's not to say things can't still work out (and it appears like they did a pretty nice job with the portal in the spring), but it sure isn't coming easy to get initial targets signed.
I don't get out here often, but I was also thinking we'd get something going Homecoming weekend. We need to add talented kids to the roster.
If the staff thinks Domask, Jones and maybe another player will be back for a 5th year, the slow recruiting makes sense. You might want to save a spot or two for an impact transfer for an all-in season.
