Was he being recruited by SIU ? 

I don't know, but considering SIU's current scholarship guards are Xavier Johnson (7 ppg), Trent Brown (3 ppg), end of list, it would seem odd to me if they didn't have some interest.

I know there's some excitement over him but he played 5 minutes a game last year and averaged 1.4 PPG.

He seems like a natural 3/wing in terms of his size and wingspan, not that we saw enough of him to really have a great feel for his game. But even if we optimistically presume he's good enough to play major minutes at the 3, there is still a glaring need for scoring and depth at the 1 and 2 guard spots.
