Salukis walks off Detroit. SIU wins 2-1.
SIU plays Northwestern tonight at 9:25pm on ESPN3.
Walk off win in bottom of the 7th. We play Northwestern in 30 mins - elimination game. Winner plays Louisville for the Regional Championship. This game will be on ESPN3 FYI.
Very nice
These are the only two Illinois teams left. Illinois and DePaul have checked out.
NU 8 - SIU 1
Not sure why Brianna Jones was allowed to start the 7th - she was obviously exhausted - threw about a million pitches today (over 200) - gave up 4 runs in the 7th on a Grand Slam. I thought SIU did not play well in this game and I wasn't crazy about the coaching.
Pinch runner slows down (instead of diving for the bag) and allows 2nd baseman, who had dropped the ball, to recover and flip to the SS for the out. Jansen made a couple of errors in CF (although she hit well), etc.
I believe the hitters were instructed to take the 1st pitch, because they watched a lot of very hittable 1st strikes go by. Unless you're a poor, undisciplined hitter, I've always thought this was bad strategy, since that's often the most hittable pitch you'll see (see it all the time in MLB - hate it) --- as opposed to NU who was jumping on the 1st pitch all game. When you're down 4 - 0 to a team as good as NU, you need to be more aggressive at the plate.
At least we won a game in the NCAAs and had a nice season, but I think we're a better team than we showed in this game.
Have some good talent coming back also. Claire Miller pitched briefly in the 7th - she can really fire that ball. I assume she'll be our #1 pitcher next year.
