Final
SIU 76
Memphis 89
Southern falls to 0-4.
Free throws were the difference. They outshot us 26 - 11 at the line and had 17 more attempts. Lots of ticky-tack fouls on us. Turnovers were down. Shot selection wasn't as wreckless. Had the same shooting numbers as Memphis. Rebounding wasn't as good as the last couple of games. Out rebounded 41-33. Had a nice rally from being down 9 in the fourth. Tied it up, but couldn't get over the hump.
Love just doesn't look the same as she has in the past. Her D is good. But her floor management isn't as good. Maybe it's because the new personnel? New coaching philosophy? Something is off with her. I really like the freshman Mason!
They'll figure it out. It's getting closer. Off to Lehigh for the weekend and an MTE.

Kent St comes in at 3-2 after beating Quinnipiac Saturday 58-55. KS has beaten Okie St as thier signature win.

Halftime. No scoring. Lots of missed shots.

CSU Cougars
This is the eight meeting between the Dawgs and the Cougars with Southern holding a 5-2 advantage. The last time we tangled with the Cougars was in December of 2013 in Carbondale. CSU won 55-51 in Coach Stien’s first season at the helm. CSU is one of only two independent Division 1 basketball teams. The other being Hartford who the Cougars will play four times this season. CSU left the WAC after this past season.
CSU has had an even rougher start to the season than we have starting 0-8 with three of those losses coming from Valley schools. (Evansville, UIC and ISU Blue) The Cougars are coached by Andrea Williams, in her first year in Chicago, with 27 years of coaching experience. She came from a Division 2 school and a few stops before that, The US Air Force Academy.
The Cougars are averaging 51.5ppg and giving up 79.5ppg. They shoot at .338/.292 (FG/3ptFG) clip and give up baskets at .466/.286. They cough up the ball 23 times a game and force 14 turnovers. They average just under 6 steals a game while their opponents swipe the ball away from them just over 11 times a game.
Chicago State Dramatis Personae –
The Cougars are lead in scoring by 5-5 Sr G Jeniah Newell and her 11.6ppg. Their second leading scorer is 6-1 FR center Josie Hill and her 7.6ppg and team high 7 rebounds per game. They do have one other player in double digit average, Tae’lor Willard (5-6 Sr Guard) at 12.0 ppg but she only played in their first three games. She’s probably injured, but that’s just a guess. Looking at their 4 regular starters they look pretty small (6-1, 5-5, 5-7 &5-10) I’m going to assume that Willard was their fifth starter. The other two who have started are 5-8 & 5-10.
A Quick Look At Us
Hans Gruber: "It’s Christmas, Theo. It’s the time of miracles. So be of good cheer…and call me when you hit the last lock.”
I’m trying to be optimistic here, folks! After the solid looking win against Lehigh, our 32-point fourth quarter outburst and valiant attempt at a comeback Sunday against Kent St., we are looking thiiiiis close to cracking this safe and coming together. There’s no doubt we have the scoring firepower from every position. The erratic shooting seems to be going down. We’ve shown progress on defense, but still have stretches of lapses. Putting both together has been the issue.
I’m not going to go as far as saying we win this by the prediction, but unless Chicago State has warp speed and teleportation in their arsenal, we should win by double digits.
GO DAWGS!!
