The Southern Illinoisan sports writers are horrendous.
Yes, whiny Wes Winkeler is all defensive on twitter not understanding why people couldn't stand Hinson and the comments directed at Hinson. I love it when sportswriters base their opinions on whether or not they are friends with the coach.
Sports journalism as a whole is a dying industry. Too many sports writers are in bed with the teams they cover (especially in small college towns where they depend on coverage of that team) and don’t report on things accurately because of it and don’t hold teams and schools accountable when things go poorly.

Journalism died a long time ago. If you look at journalism in the time of Lincoln you realize the profession has not evolved and in many instances has regressed.
What do you guys think about the troy hudson rumor?
If he’s willing I think he’d make a great assistant, seems motivated and has recruiting connections.

Seems to me like Jerry is doing his due-diligence in reaching out to a Saluki legend. I don’t see him getting a head coaching job but maybe there’s a place for him somewhere?

There are plenty of sportswriters and other journalists who still do really good work, despite the serious challenges in the industry. Just so happens that Les Winkeler and Co. are not among them, and his ill-reasoned social media sanctimony can be especially irritating. I seriously think he'd have let Hinson coach 25 years without making the NCAAs, winning the conference or beating a single power conference opponent if he had his druthers.

Unless something has changed drastically, I think I'd say thank you for your interest and move on.
Honestly Les Winkeler seems to be the most bias sports writer in the valley. He seems very upset hinson is gone.
That's too bad. Les clearly isn't a fan of Saluki Men's Basketball if he was satisfied watching the program wallow in mediocrity with no hope of making a post season tournament.
One would hope that SIU is ready to move the program back into a prominent state in the world of NCAA basketball. It is a significant opportunity to get SIU some positive press at a time when the university desperately needs it.

He basically defends hinson by saying well he got their grades in order, thats his only defense though.
Why would Kill care anything about what is posted here?
It's just a message board. Every school with a fan base that gives a nmad has them. It's just something fans do mostly for fun anyway.
I’m not sure how anyone could defend that record Hinson accrued. Good riddance.

What's his record if the Div2 (and Lower) schools are eliminated from the W-L record?

Great first post.
Welcome!
March on triumphantly!

I'm pretty sure that the exhibition games weren't counted toward his record (but I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong about that). I took a quick look through the schedules for his time here and was surprised to see that--again, not including exhibition games--there was only one D2 (or lower) school on the schedule for each of those years, and a shocking zero this past year.
Anyway, if you knock out the D2 games, he has six fewer wins, which gives him an overall record against D1 teams of 110-111.
Impressive, eh?
